Turbard

Selected Biography

Turbard, Bertie Charles – Born: Hempstead, Essex on 7.9.1880.[1]  Parents: George Turbard (Agricultural Labourer) and Laura [née Clarke].  Home: Folly Hall, Hempstead, Essex (1881), 108 Leyton Rd, Forest Gate, London (1901), Lodge Gate, Rodbridge Farm, Long Melford (1911), 16 Queen’s Road, Sudbury, Suffolk (1939).  Occupation: Labourer at a Railway Wheel Works (1901), Milkman and Milk Roundsman for William Jennings Mills of Rodbridge, Long Melford (1911) to [1916], Retail Milkman (1939).  Married: Ellen Louisa Cackett in 1905.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in June 1916, Jennings Mills, Bertie’s employer, applied for exemption on his behalf.  He was given four months grace before conscription.  His employer applied again in March 1917, this time Turbard was granted a conditional exemption.  No definitive military record has been found; however, references can be found to a Bertie Tarbard [sic] serving as Bdr.6601 with the Royal Field Artillery.  It is unlikely that these records apply, as the artilleryman was posted to France in July 1915, a date inconsistent with the Melford Tribunal’s rulings.[2]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1962.

Notes – [1] 1939 Register. [2] For the Tribunal’s rulings see Suffolk and Essex Free Press 21.6.1916 and 28.3.1917.  Records exist in the name of Tarbard see his Service Medal and Award Rolls 1914-1918 [WO 329] and Service Medal and Award Rolls Index Cards 1914-1922 [WO 372].
