Anniss

The Anniss family are included in this study as Percy Cook Anniss came to Long Melford in the 1930s to manage the Cock and Bell Inn in Hall Street.

ANNISS, Percy Cook 1896-1973

Born: Budleigh Salterton, Devon on 10.11.1896.  Parents: Richard George Cook Anniss (Carpenter) [see details below] and Lily Elizabeth [née Cooper].  Family Connections: Bother to William John Anniss [b1889] and brother-in-law of William James Reginald Atherton DCM [b1895]. Home: 17 Cliff Road, Budleigh Salterton, Devon (1901 and 1911), Cock and Bell Inn, Hall Street, Long Melford (1939), 15 Exeter Gate, South Molton, Devon [1973].  Occupation: Grocer’s Errand Boy (1911), Hotel Proprietor of the Cock and Bell Inn (1939).  Married: Rosa Lavis in 1922.  Service Record: Percy was conscripted in 1915 as Pte.15728 with 8th [Service] Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, posted to France from 15.12.1915 as part of 20th Brigade, 7th Division.  His battalion saw action during the Somme Offensive of 1916 and at the Battles of Arras and Third Ypres in 1917.  In December 1917 8th Devons was posted to Italy, taking up position on the Piave Front.  Private Anniss returned to England, transferring to the Army Reserve in March 1919.  Died: South Molton, Devon on 22.7.1973.[1]

ANNISS, Richard George Cook 1866-1952

Born: Budleigh Salterton, Devon on 6.10.1866.  Parents: William Anniss and Mary Grace [née Cook].  Family Connections: Father to William John Anniss [b1889] and Percy Cook Annis [b1896]; also, father-in-law of William James Reginald Atherton DCM [b1895].  Home: 17 Cliff Road, Budleigh Salterton, Devon (1901 to 1939).  Occupation: Carpenter (1901 to 1939).  Married: Lily Elizabeth Cooper in 1887.  Service Record: Before the Great War Richard served with 7th Royal Garrison Artillery Volunteers.  On 5.12.1914 he enlisted as Pte.2962 with ‘A’ Company, 5th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, transferring as Pte.3798 to 86th Provisional Battalion, being discharged due to sickness on 25.3.1916. Died: Devon in 1952.[1]

ANNISS, William John 1889-1969

Born: Budleigh Salterton, Devon in 1889.  Parents: Richard George Cook Anniss (Carpenter) [see details above] and Lily Elizabeth [née Cooper].  Family Connections: Bother to Percy Cook Anniss [b1896] and brother-in-law of William James Reginald Atherton DCM [b1895].  Home: 17 Cliff Road, Budleigh Salterton, Devon (1901, 1911).  Occupation: Carpenter (1911).  Married: Ethel Smith [d1920] in 1914, Alice Ena Newstead [d1924] in 1922 and Winifred Ivy Melbourne Philpot in 1925.  Service Record: William served as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant in the Royal Engineers during the First World War.  Died: in 1969.
