Volunteering

Opportunities for everyone over 18 to support the museum, both ‘behind-the-scenes’ and at public events.

Are you a lover of local history? Do you like meeting new people?

Are you interested in research? Are you keen to support your local community?

If you’re over 18 and are looking for a role with opportunities to try new things – volunteering with us might be the thing for you!

The Centre is managed by an amazing team of volunteers supporting the trustees, who get involved with a whole range of projects and activities. We couldn’t do what we do without them!

Volunteering is a great way to gain some experience working within a museum environment. This can mean learning new skills, taking part in a dig, undertaking research as a citizen curator, telling stories, becoming closer to the community and noticing what is so special about living in Long Melford. Volunteers also participate in projects attached to a particular exhibition at certain times of the year, or support family or adult events during school holidays.

Some of the opportunities we offer:

  • Melford Memories – collate local stories and help gather initial research for exhibitions at the Centre
  • work with our archives to help catalogue and document the collection
  • opportunity to use graphic design skills

Future projects:
a pop-up museum of over 75 objects: Telling a Story
a buildings research project

Learning
Did You Know? Project
There is a lot of evidence that hearing, telling, reading and writing stories is good for children. It builds language and reasoning, imagination and empathy. And unlike many things that are good for them, children enjoy stories. But spoken and written stories are being displaced in children’s lives.

That’s one reason why we’re working hard to create a special project at the Centre which we hope to launch in 2023. It will showcase over 100 ways of inspiring children through stories from our collection, which all connect with the village. We hope you’ll join us on the next stage of our journey towards this goal.

Our volunteers are vital in supporting the Centre’s work. More than 100 people donate their time to engage visitors over the summer months, take part in excavations with our Archaeological Team, undertake research on items in the collection and support us in so many other ways.

We have a range of exciting opportunities for you to get involved both with the public and behind the scenes. These volunteering roles are designed to inspire and benefit those taking part as much as they support the Centre.
