Selected Biographies

Clouting, Bertram Edward – Born: Little Glemham, Suffolk on 10.6.1880.[1]  Parents: Mark Clouting (Groom and Gardener) and Elizabeth [née Cornish].  Family Connections: Brother to Gertrude Agnes Clouting [b1883] and brother-in-law of Arthur George Sewell of Long Melford [b1884].  Home: Turnpike Road, Little Glemham, Suffolk (1881), Brook Street, Little Glemham (1891), The Green, Long Melford (1911), Tattingstone, Suffolk (1921), 17 Marlborough Street, Ipswich (1939).  Occupation: Private Mental Health Attendant (1911), Agent for the Prudential Assurance Company (1921), School Porter (1939).  Married: Emma Hyde in 1905.  Service Record: Bertram enlisted in 1915 as Pte.19551 with 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, transferring as Pte.40644 to 7th [Service] Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, then to 1/4th Battalion, Norfolks.  As there does not appear to be an extant Service Record for Bertram, it is not possible to say with any certainty where and with which unit he was serving at any given time.  However, all the battalions quoted were posted overseas: 1st Northants was already on the Western Front in 1915, 7th Norfolks followed in May 1915 and 1/4th Norfolks was sent to Gallipoli from July to December of the same year.[2]  During the Second World War he acted as a member of the Ipswich First Aid Medical Section.[3]  Died: Braintree, Essex in 1972.

Clouting, Gertrude Agnes – Born: Little Glemham, Suffolk in 1883.  Parents: Mark Clouting (Gardener) and Elizabeth Alice [née Cornish].  Family Connections: Sister to Bertram Edward Clouting [b1880]; also, sister-in-law of William Charles Sewell [b1881], Maud Sewell [b1882], Edmund Sewell [b1887] and Margery Sewell [b1889].  Home: Brook Street, Yoxford, Suffolk, (1891), 9 Long Row, Leiston, Suffolk (1901), Ipswich Nurses’ Home, 7 Lower Street, Ipswich, Suffolk [1907], The Green, Long Melford (1911).  Occupation: Certified Midwife and District Nurse (1911).  Married: Arthur George Sewell in 1912 [see above for details].  Service Record: Gertrude qualified as a Midwife in 1907.[4]  She enlisted on 1.1.1914 serving throughout the First World War as a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse until her discharge in December 1920.[5]  Died: Mildenhall, Suffolk in 1934.

Sewell, Arthur George – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 29.11.1884.[6]  Parents: Charles Harris Sewell (Coconut Matting Manufacturer) and Charlotte [née Whittle].  Family Connections: Brother to William Charles Sewell [b1881], Maud Sewell [b1882], Edmund Sewell [b1887] and Margery Sewell [b1889]; also, brother-in-law of Ernest Ambrose [b1878] and Bertram Edward Clouting [b1880], and nephew of Robert Arthur Sewell [b1864], and cousin of Herbert Arthur Sewell [b1889], Frederick Sewell [b1893], Owen Charles Sewell [b1896] and Leonard Sewell [b1910].  Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1891 to 1911), 10 Albert Street, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk [1919], Chemists Shop, Mildenhall, Suffolk (1939).  Occupation: Chemist’s Assistant (1911), Dispensing Chemist (1939).  Married: Gertrude Agnes Clouting in 1912 [see details below].  Service Record: Although no definitive military record has been found Arthur may have worked as a Red Cross volunteer during the First World War.  If this assumption is correct, then he served as an orderly from 31.8.1917 to 30.1.1919 transporting wounded at Bury Hospital.[7]  Died: Mildenhall, Suffolk on 30.9.1945.[8]
