Deeks, Ernest – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 10.1.1875.[7]  Parents: John James Deeks (Agricultural Labourer) and Mary Ann [née Joslin].  Family Connections: Brother to Herbert Deeks [b1874]; also, cousin of George Deeks [b1878] and Willie Deeks [b1882].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1881 to 1911).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1891 to 1911).  Service Record: Ernest enlisted in 1895 as Gnr.1757 with the Suffolk Artillery, being discharged in 1900. He re-enlisted in 1902 as Gnr.2684 of the Royal Garrison Artillery, receiving his discharge in 1906.  It is not known if Ernest saw service during the First World War as no definitive military record has been found.[8]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1938.

Deeks, Ernest George – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 12.7.1883.[9]  Parents: Bowers James Deeks (Agricultural Labourer) and Harriett [née Newman].  Family Connections: Brother to Walter John Deeks [b1885]; also, brother-in-law of George Edward Barson [b1887] and cousin of Walter Henry Deeks [b1890].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1891 to 1939).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1901), Maltster’s Labourer (1911 to 1939).  Married: Florence Sheerman in 1907.  Service Record: Ernest enlisted on 17.3.1915 as Pte.18697 with 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, transferring to 1st Battalion, Suffolks on 3.10.1915 and posted to France as part of 84th Brigade, 28th Division.  On 23.10.1915 he was posted with his battalion to Salonika and in November 1916 was transferred to 84th Trench Mortar Battery until 13.1.1919 being discharged three months later.[10]  In October 1919 he was diagnosed with malaria, which had been contracted while he was on active service in Salonika.[11]  Died: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 1957.

Deeks, Herbert – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 5.3.1874.[25]  Parents: John James Deeks (Agricultural Labourer) and Mary Ann [née Joslin].  Family Connections: Brother to Ernest Deeks [b1875]; also, cousin of George Deeks [b1878] and Willie Deeks [b1882].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1881 to 1891), 11 Grosvenor Buildings, Cotton Street, Poplar, London [1909], a patient in Convalescent Home, Herne Bay, Kent (1911), 46 Buchan Street, St Leonards Road, Poplar, London [1914] to (1921).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1891), Stableman for London and Northwestern Railway (1911 to 1921).  Married: Ruth Fanny Mayhew in 1904.  Service Record: Before 1892 Herbert was a member of 2nd [Volunteer] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.  He enlisted in 1892 as Gnr.93734 in 52nd Field Battery, Royal Artillery, serving in India, and in South Africa during the Second Anglo-Boer War.  He took part in the Defence of Ladysmith, also seeing action at Laings Nek and in the Orange Free State, receiving his discharge in 1909.  On 5.9.1914 he re-enlisted as Dvr.14687 with 79th Battery, Royal Field Artillery and was posted to France from 10.2.1915 to 8.6.1918.  While stationed on the Western Front he transferred to 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, seeing action during the Somme Offensive of 1916, receiving his discharge in 1919.[26]  Died: Stepney, London 1934.

Deeks, Mrs Kathleen Dudley [née Goodchild] – Born: Clare, Suffolk on 31.5.1877.[27]  Parents: George Walter Goodchild (Butcher) and Eliza [née Frost].  Home: Stettles Farm, Belchamp Otten, Essex (1911), High Street Farm, Long Melford (1921 to 1939), Hill House, Rodbridge, Long Melford [1953].  Married: George Charles Deeks [see above for details] in 1907.  Service Record: Mrs Deeks was a member of the Long Melford Women’s Institute when it was founded May 1918.  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 2.11.1953.[28]

Deeks, Reginald Albert – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 14.7.1909.[29]  Parents: Walter John Deeks (Agricultural Labourer) [see below for military details] and Emma [née Steggles].  Family Connections: Nephew of Ernest George Deeks [b1883] and cousin of Walter Henry Deeks [b1890].  Home: Station Road, Long Melford (1911 to 1921), Spicers Lane, Hall Street, Long Melford (1939), Southgate Street, Long Melford [1981].  Occupation: Brewery Hand [1926].  Married: Florence Maud Ringer in 1936.[30]  Service Record: Reginald enlisted in 1926 for a period of four years as Gnr.772272 with the Territorial section of the Royal Artillery.[31]  At the end of his term in 1928 he re-enlisted with 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, his unit being posted to France in 1940 as part of 17th Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division.  Following evacuation from Dunkirk he was stationed in Egypt before joining the invasion force of Sicily and Italy in 1943.  Private Deeks was wounded in action in Italy on 15.12.1943.[32]  Died: Sudbury in 1981.

Deeks, Spencer Albon – Born: Clare, Suffolk on 5.5.1890.[33]  Parents: Harry James Deeks (Coach Trimmer) and Alice [née Bowyer].  Family Connections: Father to Clair Spencer Deeks [b1918]; also, brother of Harry James Bowyer [b1887] and brother-in-law of Frederick Benjamin Lee [b1883].  Home: Clare (1901 to 1911), Saddler’s Shop, The Posting House, Hall Street, Long Melford [1916] to (1939).  Occupation: Saddler and Harness Maker in Long Melford and Hartest [1916] to (1939).[34]  Married: Emily Constance Shelley in 1915.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in April 1916 Spencer Deeks applied for exemption from conscription.  He employed an apprentice and did work for four hundred horses and binder canvasses on farms in the district.  He was attested but granted six months delay before his conscription.[35]  In August 1917 he had to re-apply for exemption, which was granted on the condition a substitute was found to take his place in the Army.  It is not known if a substitute was forthcoming or has an extant military record been found.  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1972.

Deeks, Walter Henry – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 5.11.1890.[36]  Parent: Ellen Elizabeth Deeks (Horsehair Weaver) [married John Stanhope in 1902].  Family Connections: Stepson of John Stanhope [b1877]; also, cousin of Ernest George Deeks [b1883] and Walter John Deeks [b1885].  Home: Rotten Row, Long Melford (1891), lodging with Alice Stearns (aunt) in Back Lane, Long Melford (1901).  Service Record: Walter enlisted in 1907 as Private, later Cpl.8755 with 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment,[37] being posted to France from 18.12.1914 as part of 15th Brigade, 5th Division.  In 1915 his division saw action at the Second Battle of Ypres and the Capture of Hill 60.[38]  Died: Walter died of wounds on 20.3.1916 at a Casualty Clearing Station at Doullens near Arras and is mentioned in the Battalion’s War Diary.  Corporal Deeks is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1 [grave ref: II.E.14], Somme, France and commemorated on the Long Melford War Memorial.[39]

Deeks, Walter John – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 2.11.1885.[40]  Parents: Bowers James Deeks (Agricultural Labourer) and Harriett [née Newman].  Family Connections: Father to Reginald Albert Deeks [b1909] and brother of Ernest George Deeks [b1883]; also, cousin of Walter Henry Deeks [b1890] and brother-in-law of George Edward Barson [b1887].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1891 and 1901), Station Road, Long Melford (1911 to 1939).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1901), Ostler (1911), Brewery Labourer (1921), General Labourer (1939).  Married: Emma Steggles in 1907.  Service Record: Recorded as a soldier at the baptism of his daughter Harriett in April 1915.[41]  His unit is not mentioned however Walter may have attested as A/Cpl.80826 with the Royal Engineers.  If this assumption is correct, then he was part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 21.8.1915.[42]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1959.

Deeks, Willie – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk in 1882.  Parents: Thomas Deeks (Agricultural Labourer) and Ann Maria [née March] (Horsehair Weaver).  Family Connections: Brother to George Deeks [b1878]: also, cousin of Herbert Deeks [b1874] and Ernest Deeks [b1875].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1891).  Occupation: Groom [1900].  Service Record: Willie enlisted in January 1900 as Pte.5492 with the Suffolk Regiment, joining 1st Battalion in August 1901 in South Africa and seeing action in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal during the Second Anglo-Boer War.  In March 1902 he was transferred to 2nd Battalion stationed in India, before returning to England in April 1904 where he re-joined 1st Battalion until his discharge six months later.[43]  It is not known if he saw service during the First World War as no definitive military record has been found.

Barson, George Edward – Born: Wellington, New Zealand on 25.2.1887.[44]  Parents: Thomas and Emma Barson.  Family Connections: Brother-in-law of Ernest George Deeks [b1883] and Walter John Deeks [b1885] both of Long Melford.  Home: 73 Sperling Road, Tottenham, London [1917].  Occupation: Labourer [1914].  Married: Mary Charlotte Deeks of Long Melford in 1917.  Service Record:  George enlisted on 11.10.1915 as Rfn.26/384 with ‘B’ Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd New Zealand [Rifle] Brigade, embarking for Europe on 5.2.1916.  He was posted to the Western Front, his unit seeing action during the Somme Offensive where he was wounded on 19.9.1916 at the Battle of Flers-Coucelette.    Died: Rifleman Barson was killed in action at Polygon Wood on 4.1.1918 and is commemorated on the New Zealand Memorial [ref: Stone 11], Buttes New British Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.  He is also remembered on the War Memorials in Featherston and Masterton in New Zealand.  On the latter memorial in Wellington his name appears above that of his brother Henry John Barson, who was killed in action eight months later.[45]

Stanhope, John – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 15.12.1877.[63]  Parents: George Stanhope (Bricklayer) and Emma Jane [née Gridley].  Family Connections: Brother to James Stanhope [b1885]; also, brother-in-law of Cecil George Brooks [b1890] and stepfather of Walter Henry Deeks [b1890].  Home: High Street, Long Melford (1881 to 1939).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1891 to 1911), Maltster’s Labourer (1939).  Married: Ellen Elizabeth Potter [née Deeks] in 1901.  Service Record: Enlisting on 28.1.1915 as Pte.202540 with 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, John was transferred to 1st Battalion, Suffolks and posted to Salonika from 24.10.1915 as part of 84th Brigade, 28th Division.  The first six months for his battalion was spent in hacking trenches into the rocky soil and laying out copious amounts of barbed wire.  By June 1916 the Division began to advance on the Bulgarian Army in the Struma valley.  The weather was blisteringly hot, and the line of march infested with flies and mosquitoes.  British forces had not yet been supplied with mosquito nets and consequently hundreds of men contracted malaria.[64]  It was probably at this time that Private Stanhope also fell prey to the disease.  It was probably due to this illness that he was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged in March 1919.[65]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1964.
