Harper

Selected Biographies

Harper, Harry – Born: Lavenham, Suffolk on 25.3.1885.  Parents: Martin Harper (Farm Bailiff) and Mary Ann [née Leggett].  Family Connections: Brother to Frederick Harper [b1887] and Stanley Harper [b1894]. Home: Wall Farm, Stansfield, Suffolk (1891). Occupation: Chauffeur Mechanic [1915].  Service Record: Harry enlisted on 5.1.1885 as rating F2938 with the Royal Navy. He was posted to France where he was injured on 27.5.1915.  He rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.[1] Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1960.

Harper, Frederick – Born: Lavenham, Suffolk on 30.3.1887.[2] Parents: Martin Harper (Farm Bailiff) and Mary Ann [née Leggett]. Family Connections: Brother to Harry Harper [b1885] and Stanley Harper [b1894]. Home: Wall Farm, Stansfield, Suffolk (1891), Butler’s Farm, Belchamp St Pauls, Essex (1901), Moorbridge, Haughley, Suffolk (1911), Old Street, Gipping, Suffolk (1939). Occupation: Motor Mechanic (1911), Lorry Driver and Motor Mechanic; also, an ARP Stretcher Bearer (1939). Married: Mabel Iris Pryke in 1912. Service Record: Frederick enlisted on 9.1.1915 as Pte.M2/034507 with the Mechanical Transport section of the Army Service Corps, being posted to France in February and serving on the Western Front with No.1 Motor Ambulance Convoy until the end of hostilities in 1918.  He received his discharge in June 1919.[3] Died: Ipswich, Suffolk in 1966.

Harper, Stanley Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 19.4.1894. Parents: Martin Harper (Farm Bailiff) and Mary Ann [née Leggett]. Family Connections: Brother to Harry Harper [b1885] and Frederick Harper [b1887]. Home: Butler’s Farm, Belchamp St Pauls, Essex (1901), Moorbridge, Haughley, Suffolk (1911), 4 Duke Street, Haughley [1939]. Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1911), Labourer [1912].  Married: Caroline McPherson Taylor in 1923.  Service Record: Stanley enlisted on 19.4.1912 as No. J.13984 in the Royal Navy.  From 31.7.1914 to 19.2.1915 he was an Able-Bodied Seaman on the troopship HMS Tyne, and from 11.5.1915 to 1.8.1918 served on HMS Abercrombie, which provided supporting fire during the Gallipoli Campaign.  He was later stationed in eastern Mediterranean, receiving his discharge in 1924.[4] Died: Haughley, Suffolk on 2.1.1939.[5]
