Selected Biographies

Harris, Frederick – Born: Kensington, London on 22.3.1874.[1] Parents: George Harris (Innkeeper of the Bull Hotel, Long Melford) and Louisa Jane [née Nash].  Family Connections: Brother to George Harris [b1880] and Walter Harris [b1885].  Home: Queen’s Head, Kirtling, Cambridgeshire (1881 and 1891), Cross Keys, 22 Carr Street, Ipswich, Suffolk (1901), British Lion Hotel, Princes Street, Ipswich (1911), Long Melford [1923], Park View, The Green, Long Melford [1937 to 1961].  Occupation: Licensed Victualler (1901), Riding Master (1911), Sugar Beet Worker (1939).  Married: Florence Bertha Claydon in 1896 and Elsie Styler in 1923.  Service Record: Frederick was recorded as a soldier on active service at his father’s funeral in Long Melford in August 1918, and as a Major at his marriage in 1923[2] and his daughter’s baptism in 1927, however the unit is not known.  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 26.7.1961 and buried at Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford.[3]

Harris, George – Born: Kirtling, Cambridgeshire in 1880.  Parents: George Harris (Innkeeper of the Bull Hotel, Long Melford) and Louisa Jane [née Nash].  Family Connections: Brother to Frederick Harris buried in Long Melford [b1874] and Walter Harris [b1885].  Home: Queen’s Head Inn, Kirtling, Cambridgeshire (1891), Golden Lion, Newmarket, Suffolk (1901), Crown Inn, Wickham Market, Suffolk (1911).  Occupation: Licensed Victualler (1911).  Married: Elizabeth Maria in 1905.  Service Record: George was recorded as a Private at the time of his father’s funeral in Long Melford in August 1918, although the unit is not known as no definitive military record has been found.[4]

Harris, Walter – Born: Kirtling, Cambridgeshire in 1885.  Parents: George Harris (Innkeeper of the Bull Hotel, Long Melford) and Louisa Jane [née Nash].  Family Connections: Brother to Frederick Harris, buried in Long Melford [b1874] and George Harris [b1880].  Home: Queen’s Head Inn, Kirtling, Cambridgeshire (1891), Golden Lion, Newmarket, Suffolk (1901), 154 Shaftesbury Avenue, London (1911), The Plough, 53 Fore Street, Moorgate Street, London [1917].  Occupation: Hotel Manager (1911) to [1917].  Married: Amy Victoria Loveridge in 1909.  Service Record: Walter was conscripted on 24.6.1916 as Pte.46076 with The Queen’s [Royal West Surrey] Regiment and mobilised on 22.2.1917 as Pte.71631 with the Labour Corps.  Walter was posted to France on 6.3.1917, transferring to 150th Labour Company on 30.12.1918, later promoted to Sergeant, and serving in No. 2 Northern Company, Non-Combatant Corps at his discharge in November 1919.[5]  Like his brothers he is recorded as being on active service at the time of his father’s funeral in Long Melford in 1918.[6] Died: Linton, Kent in 1955.
