Selected Biographies

Keeble, Alfred – Born: Monks Eleigh, Suffolk in 1857. Parents: Alfred Keeble and Elizabeth [née Smith]. Family Connections: Brother to Henry Keeble [b1854] and John Keeble [b1862]; also, uncle of James Keeble [b1876] and Alfred Harry Keeble [b1884] both of Long Melford. Home: High Street, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk (1861 to 1871). Occupation: Agricultural Labourer [1878]. Married: Maria Clarke in 1884. Service Record: Alfred enlisted in 1878 as Pte.1124 with 32nd Brigade, being posted in 1879 to India and seeing action during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He returned to England in 1884, being transferred to the Suffolk Regiment and placed on the Army Reserve until his discharge in 1890.[1] Died: Cosford, Suffolk in 1890.

Keeble, Alfred ‘Harry’ – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 3.5.1884.[2] Parents: Robert Keeble (Blacksmith) and Charlotte [née Rutter]. Family Connections: Brother to James Keeble [b1876] and uncle of William James Keeble [b1902]; also, nephew of Henry Keeble [b1854], Alfred Keeble [b1857] and John Keeble [b1862], and brother-in-law of Albert Edward Younger [b1878]. Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1891), St Catherines Road, Long Melford (1901), living with Albert Younger (brother-in-law) in Westgate Street, Long Melford (1911), Hall Street, Long Melford (1921).[3] Occupation: Iron Fitter and Turner for David Ward, Iron Founder of Long Melford (1901 to 1921). Service Record: Before 1901 Harry was a member of 2nd [Volunteer] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. From 1901 to 1902 he joined the 3rd [Militia] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment as Pte.5541, transferring on 7.3.1902 as Gnr.22301 to 107th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, being discharged on 6.3.1914. It is not known if he saw service during the First World War as no definitive record has been found under the name of either Alfred or Harry Keeble.[4]

Keeble, Claud Cyril – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 14.7.1891.[5] Parents: John Thomas Keeble (Postmaster of Long Melford) and Elizabeth Durwin [née Smith]. Family Connections: Brother to John Lionel Cockle Keeble [b1884], Ida Florence Keeble [b1892] and Lawrence Victor Keeble [b1895]; also, brother-in-law of Francis Alfred Jackson [b1893], Henry James Skitmore [b1890] and Harold Ward Byford [b1897]. Home: Post Office, Hall Street, Long Melford (1901 to 1911), 11 Osborne Road, Leyton, Essex [1914], 8 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, Essex (1921), 18 Buxton Road, Erith, Kent (1939). Occupation: Engineer Fitter and Turner for Horsehair Seating Manufacturer (1911), Locomotive Engineer for Great Eastern Railways (1921), Fitter and Turner (1939). Married: Elsie May Redfern in 1934. Service Record: Claud served with the Essex Army Service Corps from 1908 to 1912.  He attested on 30.12.1914 as Pte.4189 with 1/14th [County of London] Battalion [London Scottish], London Regiment, being posted to France from 17.8.1915 to 30.3.1916 as part of 1st Brigade, 1st Division, where his unit saw action at the Battle of Loos during the autumn of 1915.  In March 1916 Claud was ordered to England to take up employment in the manufacture of munitions at the workshops of The Great Eastern Railway in Stratford in East London.  On 31.5.1918 he re-joined his unit in France as Pte.510938 to No. 10 Platoon, ‘C’ Company, London Scottish at this time part of 168th Brigade, 56th [1st London] Division.  On 26.6.1918 he received a gunshot wound to his wrist, while on duty in a front-line trench on Telegraph Hill, near the village of Tilloy. Three months of treatment followed before he re-joined his unit at Aubencheul-au-Bac on 3.10.1918.  Private Keeble returned to England at the end of November, receiving his discharge in March 1919.[6] Died: Wycombe, Buckinghamshire in 1969.

Keeble, Ethel Alice – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 15.3.1909.[7] Parents: James Keeble (Blacksmith) and Sarah Elizabeth [née Scrivener]. Family Connections: Sister to William James Keeble [b1902] and Robert Frederick Keeble [b1914]; also, niece of Alfred Harry Keeble [b1884]. Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1911 to 1939). Married: Albert Edward Web in 1939. Service Record: Ethel is recorded as a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nursing Auxiliary with the British Red Cross in 1939. Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 30.5.1984.[8]

Keeble, Frederick James – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 17.5.1883.[9] Parents: Marshall William Keeble (Packer) and Cepha [née Simonds]. Family Connections: Brother-in-law of William Bantoff Newson [b1884]. Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1891), 55 Mayville Road, Leytonstone, Essex (1911), 49 Browning Road, Leytonstone [1915] to (1921), 12 Pelham Road, South Woodford, Essex (1939). Occupation: Coachman (1911), Coachman and Gardener [1915], Gardener (1921 to 1939). Married: Emily Catherine Kitchen in 1911. Service Record: Frederick was conscripted on 1.12.1915 as Rfn.8026 with 2/17th [County of London] Battalion [Poplar and Stepney Rifles], London Regiment, part of 180th Brigade, 60th [2/2nd London] Division. He was issued with a new service number in 1917 as Rfn.573920 and posted to Salonika from 1.2.1917, transferring to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 16.6.1917 and seeing action in Palestine at the Third Battle of Gaza in November 1917. From 22.6.1918 he was posted with his battalion to the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front, coming under the command of 30th Division’s 89th Brigade and taking part in the Final Advance in Flanders in the closing days of the War. Frederick Keeble was kept in France until October 1919, returning to England, and receiving his discharge shortly after.[10] Died: Southwest Essex in 1952.

Keeble, Henry ‘Harry’ – Born: Monks Eleigh, Suffolk in 1854. Parents: Alfred Keeble and Elizabeth [née Smith]. Family Connections: Brother to Alfred Keeble [b1857] and John Keeble [b1862]; also, uncle of James Keeble [b1876] and Alfred Harry Keeble [b1884] both of Long Melford. Home: High Street, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk (1861 to 1871). Occupation: Agricultural Labourer [1876]. Service Record: Harry enlisted in 1876 as Pte.1938 with 12th [Prince of Wales’s] Royal Regiment of Lancers, being posted immediately to India where he saw action at the Battle of Ali Masjidin in 1878, one of the opening forays in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.  Returning to England in 1887 he was discharged the following year.[11]

Keeble, Ida Florence – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 21.9.1892.[12] Parents: John Thomas Keeble (Postmaster of Long Melford) and Elizabeth Durwin [née Smith]. Family Connections: Sister to John Lionel Cockle Keeble [b1884], Claud Cyril Keeble [b1891] and Lawrence Victor Keeble [b1895]; also, sister-in-law of George Gainsford Jackson [b1882] and Charles Nunn Jackson [b1887], Harry James Skitmore [b1890] and Harold Ward Byford [b1897]. Keeble, James – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 5.2.1876.[14] Parents: Robert Keeble (Blacksmith) and Charlotte [née Rutter]. Family Connections: Father of William James Keeble [b1902] and brother to Alfred Harry Keeble [b1884]; also, nephew of Henry Keeble [b1854], Alfred Keeble [b1857] and John Keeble [b1862] and brother-in-law of Alfred Edward Younger [b1878]. Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1881), Hall Street, Long Melford (1891), St Catherines Road, Long Melford (1901), Hall Street, Long Melford (1911 to 1921). Occupation: Apprentice Blacksmith (1891), Blacksmith for David Ward, Iron Founder of Long Melford (1901 to 1921). Married: Sarah Elizabeth Scrivener in 1899. Service Record: James was a member of the Long Melford Volunteer Training Corps in 1915.[15]  At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in June 1916 his employer David Ward applied for his exemption from conscription, which was granted on the condition that his situation remained unchanged.[16]  It is not known if Keeble’s certificate remained valid until the end of hostilities, however no definitive military record has been found to suggest otherwise. Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1922.

Family Connections: Brother to Henry Keeble [b1854] and Alfred Keeble [b1857]; also, uncle of James Keeble [b1876] and Alfred Harry Keeble [b1884] both of Long Melford.  Home: High Street, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk (1871), Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1881), Shrapnel Barracks, Charlton, London (1901), 2 William Road, Catford, London (1911), 2 Killearn Road, Lewisham, London (1921). Occupation: Blacksmith (1881), Shoeing Smith in the Army [1884 to 1905], War Office Pensioner (1911 to 1921). Married: Caroline Daniels in 1891. Service Record: John enlisted in 1884 as Pte.5156 with the Commissariat and Transport Corps as a shoeing smith. In 1890 he signed on for a further twelve years, his unit being renamed shortly after as the Army Service Corps. By the time of his discharge in 1905 he had attained the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant.[17] Died: Dartford, Kent in 1934.

Keeble, John Frederick – Born: Long Stratton, Norfolk on 22.10.1881.[18] Parents: Francis Aldis Keeble (Shoemaker) and Ellen [née Dowe]. Service Record: John was conscripted on 5.6.1916 as Pte.46125 with the Royal Flying Corps, transferring to the Royal Air Force on 1.4.1918.[19]

Keeble, John Lionel Cockle – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 26.7.1884.[20] Parents: John Thomas Keeble (Postmaster of Long Melford) and Elizabeth Durwin [née Smith]. Family Connections: Brother to Claud Cyril Keeble [b1891], Ida Florence Keeble [b1892] and Lawrence Victor Keeble [b1895]; also, brother-in-law of Francis Alfred Jackson [b1893], Henry James Skitmore [b1890] and Harold Ward Byford [b1897]. Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1891 and 1901), Dairy Farm, Horsford, Norfolk (1911), 20 North End, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire (1921), 5 Corporation Road, Wisbech (1939) to [1949]. Keeble, Lawrence Victor – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 23.2.1895.[23]  Parents: John Thomas Keeble (Postmaster of Long Melford) and Elizabeth Durwin [née Smith].  Family Connections: Brother to John Lionel Cockle Keeble [b1884] and Claud Cyril Keeble [b1891] and Ida Florence Keeble [1892]; also, brother-in-law of Francis Alfred Jackson [b1893 Home: Post Office, Hall Street, Long Melford (1901 to 1921), 29 Butt Road, Colchester, Essex (1939). Occupation: Law Clerk (1911), Fitter for Motor Tractor Company in Sudbury (1921), Motor Mechanic for the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in Colchester (1939), Timber Merchant [1954].[24] Married: Violetta May Baxter in 1926. Service Record: Lawrence enlisted on 26.4.1915 as Aircraft Mechanic No.4889 with the Royal Flying Corps. He was posted to the France from 11.9.1915, transferring to the Royal Air Force on 1.4.1918, promoted to Corporal on 1.7.1918 and discharged in 1923.[25] In 1939 Lawrence was mobilized as Cpl.4889 and assigned to No.10 Flying Training School based at RAF Tern Hill in Shropshire.[26]Died: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk 1960.

Keeble, Robert Frederick – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 16.11.1914.[27] Parents: James Keeble (Blacksmith) and Sarah Elizabeth [née Scrivener]. Family Connections: Brother to William James Keeble [b1902] and Ethel Alice Keeble [b1909]; also, nephew of Alfred Harry Keeble [b1884]. Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1921 to 1939). Married: Mabel Mary Steward in 1952. Service Record: Frederick enlisted in June 1941 as Pte.1802565 with 226 Light Anti-Aircraft Training Regiment, Royal Artillery. He was posted to India and served with 36 Light AA Regiment during the Burma Campaign, receiving his discharge in 1946.[28] Died: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 1965.

Byford, Harold Ward – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 12.2.1898.[31] Parents: Joseph William Byford (Coal Merchant and Cartage Agent) and Ada Mary [née Ward]. Home: Guildhall Farm, Rodbridge, Long Melford (1901), Hall Street, Long Melford (1911), Bradley Hall Bungalow, Thorpe Green, Essex (1939). Occupation: Manager in his father’s Coal Merchant and Cartage business (1911), Unemployed Cowman (1939). Married: Olive Elizabeth Maud Keeble in 1917.[32] Service Record: Harold was a member of the Long Melford Volunteer Training Corps in 1915.[33]  At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in January 1917 his father asked that his son be exempted. This was refused with the small proviso that one month grace should be given before conscription.[34] He was called up before May 1917 as Pte.TR/5/62179 with 85th [Training Reserve] Battalion, posted to France and transferred as Pte.44881 to 11th [Service] Battalion [Pioneers], Durham Light Infantry as part of 20th [Light] Division. He was later moved to 2nd Battalion, DLI and finally to 18th [Service] Battalion, DLI.[35] Died: Cambridge, Cambridgeshire in 1967.

In 1911 he is recorded as Pte.5486 William Claydon serving with 16th [The Queen’s] Lancers who was dishonourably discharged for bigamy. Criminal Record: On 28.6.1911 William pleaded guilty at West Ham Police Court to ‘feloniously marrying Ada Earl [using the alias Claydon], his former wife being then alive’. He was handed a sentence of six months with hard labour to be served in Wormwood Scrubs Prison.[39] Died: Radford, Warwickshire on 14.11.1940 during a Luftwaffe raid on Coventry. This is the night of the infamous Coventry Blitz when 500 German bombers dropped 150,000 incendiary bombs and hundreds of tons of high explosive. Much of the city and surrounding area was reduced to rubble, resulting in the loss of over a 1000 people, killed or severely injured.[40]

Family Connections: Brother-in-law of John Lionel Cockle Keeble [b1884], Claud Cyril Keeble [b1891], Ida Florence Keeble [b1892] and Lawrence Victor Keeble [b1895]. Home: Bow Street, Great Ellingham, Norfolk (1891 to 1901), 22 Gainsborough Street, Sudbury, Suffolk (1911), 6 Stour Street, Sudbury (1921), 30 York Road, Sudbury (1939) to [1942].
