Selected Biography

Malton, Albert – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 27.3.1875.[1]  Parents: James Malton (Maltster’s Labourer) and Alice [née Woodgate] (Horsehair Weaver).  Family Connections: Father of George Albert Malton [b1899]; also, cousin of Ernest William Malton [b1876], Ethelbert Malton [b1882], Victor John Malton [b1888], Charles Albert Malton [b1896], William Robert Malton [b1883] and Percy Walter Moulton [b1892].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1881) to [1945].  Occupation: Cowman and Milkman on Farm (1901 to 1939).  Married: Sophia Maxim in 1898.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in November 1916, William Jennings Mills of Rodbridge Farm, Long Melford argued on Malton’s behalf that whilst Albert had been conscripted, he had already reached the age of 41 before the passing of the Military Service Act for married men.  The Tribunal agreed that he should be provisionally withdrawn from active service and placed on the Army Reserve.[2]  He is recorded in 1915 as a member of the Long Melford Volunteer Training Corps.[3]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 4.8.1945.[4]

Malton, Charles Albert – Born: St Johns Wood, London on 29.8.1896.[5]  Parents: William Malton of Long Melford (Gardener) and Harriett Hans [née Evans].  Family Connections: Brother to Ernest William Malton of Long Melford [b1876], Ethelbert Malton [b1882] and Victor John Malton [b1888]; also, cousin of Long Melford men Albert Malton [b1875], William Robert Malton [b1883] and Percy Walter Moulton [b1892].  Home: 20 Barrow Hill Road, Marylebone (1901 to 1921), 116 Grove Crescent, Wembley, Middlesex (1939).  Occupation: Clerk [1916], Clerk for Messrs. Claudius Ash & Sons, Dental Manufacturers of Golden Square, London (1921), ARP Warden (1939).  Married: Violet May Wilks in 1932.  Service Record: Charles was conscripted on 21.1.1916 as an Aircraft Mechanic with the Royal Flying Corps and posted to France from 3.6.1916 to 31.2.1919.  On 1.4.1918 he transferred as No. 18999 to the Royal Air Force, moving to the RAF Reserve in May 1919.[6]  Died: Cuckfield, Suffolk in 1968.

Malton, Ernest William – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 19.4.1876.[7]  Parents: William Malton of Long Melford (Gardener) and Harriett Hans [née Evans].  Family Connections: Brother to Ethelbert Malton [b1882], Victor John Malton [b1888] and Charles Albert Malton [b1896]; also, cousin of Long Melford men Albert Malton [b1875], William Robert Malton [b1883] and Percy Walter Moulton [b1892].  Home: 56 Charles Street, Marylebone, London (1881), 25 Townsend Cottages, Marylebone (1891), 20 Barrow Hill Road, Marylebone (1901) to [1931].[8]  Occupation: Greengrocer’s Boy (1891), Glass Works Foreman (1901), General Labourer (1911), House Decorator for Taverner & Sons, Builders and Decorators of Hampstead (1921).  Service Record: Ernest was conscripted on 18.6.1916 as Pte.327492 with 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment.  His record suggests that he did not serve overseas, being issued with a Silver War Badge, and discharged on 15.10.1917 suffering with valvular disease of the heart.[9]  Died: Marylebone Workhouse, London on 13.9.1931.[10]

Malton, Ethelbert – Born: Marylebone, London on 30.1.1882.[11]  Parents: William Malton of Long Melford (Gardener) and Harriett Hans [née Evans].  Family Connections: Brother to Ernest William Malton of Long Melford [b1876], Victor John Malton [b1888] and Charles Albert Malton [b1896]; also, cousin of Long Melford men Albert Malton [b1875], William Robert Malton [b1883] and Percy Walter Moulton [b1892].   Home: 25 Townsend Cottages, Marylebone, London (1891), 20 Barrow Hill Road, Marylebone (1901), 1 Abbey Gardens Mews, St Johns Wood, London (1911), 36 Townsend Cottages, Marylebone [1918 to 1948], 17 Avenue House, Allitsen Road, Marylebone [1949 to 1952].[12]  Occupation: Auxiliary Postman (1911), Electrician (1939).  Married: Ada Mabel ‘Jessie’ Palfrey [1882-1913] in 1907 and Priscilla Goldsmith in 1913.  Service Record: Ethelbert was conscripted on 8.12.1915 and immediately transferred to the Army Reserve.  Mobilised on 6.6.1916 he was sent as Pte.4755 with 3/10th [County of London] Battalion [Hackney], London Regiment, transferring on 23.6.1916 as Pte.235463 to 678th [Home Service] Company, Labour Corps.  He received his discharge in February 1919.[13]  Died: Marylebone, London in 1952.

Malton, George Albert – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 8.1.1899.[14]  Parents: Albert Malton (Milkman on Farm) [see his details above] and Sophia [née Maxim].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1901 to 1911), Woods End, London Road, Copdock, Suffolk (1939).  Military Record: Although no definitive First World War record has been found, George may have enlisted as Pte.59365 with 6th [Service] Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment.  If this assumption is correct, he would have been posted to France as part of 54th Brigade, 18th [Eastern] Division, seeing action during the Somme Offensive of 1916, the Third Battles of Ypres in 1917 and the Battles of the Hindenburg Line and Final Advance in Artois of 1918, receiving his discharge in 1922.[15]

Malton, John – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 20.6.1884.[16] Parents: George Malton of Stansfield, Suffolk (Coal Merchant) and Rose Anne [née Gipp].  Home: Liston Lane, Long Melford (1891), St Marys Street, Long Melford (1901 to 1921), Rodbridge Corner, Long Melford (1939).  Occupation: Coal Carter (1901), General Labourer at the Stafford Allen Drug Works (1921), incapacitated Labourer (1939).  Married: Violet E. Day in 1920.[17]  Service Record: At a Melford Military Service Tribunal in March 1916, John Molton [sic] was granted a one-month exemption from conscription.  In May any further exemption was refused.[18]  He was conscripted on 17.2.1916 as Gnr.111167 with 152nd Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery and posted to France. He was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged on 25.6.1918 due to sickness.[19]

Malton, Victor John – Born: St Johns Wood, London on 14.7.1888.[20]  Parents: William Malton of Long Melford (Gardener) and Harriett Hans [née Evans].  Family Connections: Brother to Ernest William Malton of Long Melford [b1876], Ethelbert Malton [b1882] and Charles Albert Malton [b1896]; also, cousin of Long Melford men Albert Malton [b1875], William Robert Malton [b1883] and Percy Walter Moulton [b1892].  Home: 25 Townsend Cottages, Marylebone (1891), 20 Barrow Hill Road, Marylebone (1901), 42 Chatteris Road, Kilburn, Middlesex (1911), 4 St Anns Terrace, St Johns Wood, London (1921).  Occupation: Electrician (1911), Electrical Engineer (1921).  Married: Catherine Fry in 1909.  Service Record: Victor was conscripted as Spr.303829 with the Royal Engineers.[21]

Malton, William Robert – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 9.7.1883.[22]  Parents: Robert Malton (Groom and Gardener) and Ellen Palmer [née Randle].  Family Connections: Cousin of Ernest William Malton [b1876], Ethelbert Malton [b1882], Victor John Malton [b1888], Charles Albert Malton [b1896], Albert Malton [b1875] and Percy Walter Moulton [b1892]; also, brother-in-law of Frederick Walter Bird [b1881] and Albert William Bird [b1884].  Home: Rodbridge Street, Long Melford (1891 to 1911), Park Terrace, Little St Marys, Long Melford (1921).  Occupation: Wheelwright and Carpenter (1901 to 1921).  Married: Daisy Gladys Bird in 1911.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in March 1916, William was granted one month exemption from conscription, at the end of November this had been amended to a conditional certificate.[23]  It is not known if the decision was ever amended as no definitive military record has been found.  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1928.

Moulton, Percy Walter – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 14.7.1892.[24]  Parents: Walter Malton, later styled Moulton (Groom) and Caroline [née Harrison].  Family Connections: Cousin of Ernest William Malton [b1876], Ethelbert Malton [b1882], Victor John Malton [b1888], Charles Albert Malton [b1896], Albert Malton [b1875] and William Robert Malton [b1883].    Home: Front Street, Ousden, Suffolk (1901), emigrated to USA [1914], East Ninety First Street, New York (1920).  Occupation: Butler (1920).  Married: Mary Kerr in 1917.  Service Record: Percy was drafted in the USA on 10.10.1917, being initially sent to 37 Company, 152nd Depot Brigade at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York.  He was posted to France until 1920, his unit however is unknown.[25]
