Mayhew

Selected Biographies

Mayhew, Harry Vivian – Born: Stanton, Suffolk in 1884.  Parents: Harry Joseph Mayhew (Farm Bailiff) and Harriet [née Alliston].  Family Connections: Brother to Oliver Hector Mayhew [b1892] and Leslie Alliston Mayhew [b1896]; also, uncle of Vivian Neville Mayhew [b1922].  Home: Stanton Hall, Stanton, Suffolk (1891), Bradfields Farm, Foxearth, Essex [1914].  Occupation: Motor Driver [1914].  Service Record: Harry enlisted on 6.8.1914 as Dvr.MS/2799 with 1st Division Supply Company, Army Service Corps.  He was posted to France, dying from pneumonia in 1915 while on active service.[1]  Died: No.7 Stationary Hospital in Boulogne on 19.2.1915, buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery [grave ref: III.C.49], Boulogne, Pas de Calais, France and commemorated on the War Memorial in Foxearth, Essex.[2]

Mayhew, Leslie Alliston – Born: Pentlow, Essex on 30.12.1896.[3] Parents: Harry Joseph Mayhew (Farm Bailiff) and Harriet [née Alliston].  Family Connections: Father to Vivian Neville Mayhew [b1922]; also, brother of Harry Vivian Mayhew [b1884] and Oliver Hector Mayhew [b1892].  Home: Huntsman Lane, Lane, Foxearth, Essex (1901), Bradfields Farm, Foxearth (1911 to 1921), 2 Falkland Cottages, The Green, Long Melford, Suffolk (1939) to [1980].  Occupation: Horseman (1921), Tractor Driver (1939).  Service Record: Leslie was a member of the Local Defence Volunteers in Long Melford, being part of ‘H’ Company, 10th Battalion, Suffolk Home Guard when it was formed in August 1942.  His name is recorded in the official tribute to the organization entitled The Lion Roared his Defiance, photographed in and around Long Melford in 1944.[4]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 8.12.1980.

Mayhew, Oliver Hector – Born: Little Waldingfield, Suffolk on 31.12.1892.[5] Parents: Harry Joseph Mayhew (Farm Bailiff) and Harriet [née Alliston].  Family Connections: Brother to Harry Vivian Mayhew [b1884] and Leslie Alliston Mayhew [b1896]; also, uncle of Vivian Neville Mayhew [b1922].  Home: Huntsman Lane, Lane, Foxearth, Essex (1901), Bradfields Farm, Foxearth (1911), 34 Cross Street, Sudbury, Suffolk (1921), 2 Straw Lane, Sudbury (1939).  Occupation: Mineral Water Maker (1911), Lorry Driver for Mauldon & Sons Brewery (1921 to 1939).  Married: Annie Maria Scrivener in 1914.  Service Record: Oliver was conscripted on 8.12.1915 as Pte.M/322788 with the Mechanical Transport section of the Army Service Corps.  He was posted to France and was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged on 16.9.1919 due to sickness.  Oliver is recorded on the War Memorial Register in St Peter and St Paul Church in Foxearth.[6]    Died: Colchester, Essex in 1942.

Mayhew, Vivian Neville – Born: Foxearth, Essex on 5.3.1922.[7]  Parents: Leslie Alliston Mayhew (Tractor Driver) [see details above] and May [née Underwood] of Long Melford.  Family Connections: Nephew of Harry Vivian Mayhew [b1884] and Oliver Hector Mayhew [b1892].  Home: 2 Falkland Cottages, The Green, Long Melford (1939), 10 Middle Way, Long Melford [2003 to 2010].[8]  Married: Olive Gwendoline Squirrell in 1949.  Service Record: Vivian enlisted in 1941 as Gnr.1129559 with The Royal Regiment of Artillery, being transferred to the Army Reserve on 20.12.1946.[9]  He was in addition a member of the Local Defence Volunteers in Long Melford, being part of ‘H’ Company, 10th Battalion, Suffolk Home Guard when it was formed in August 1942.  His name is recorded in the official tribute to the organization entitled The Lion Roared his Defiance, photographed in and around Long Melford in 1944.[10]  Died: Long Melford on 30.5.2018.
