Selected Biography

Meggs, Henry ‘Harry’ Philip – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 30.10.1895.[1]  Parents: Harry Meggs (Groom, later Hotel Cab Driver) and Emma [née Howe].  Home: St Catherines Road, Long Melford [1895], Cadges Yard, Westgate Street, Long Melford (1901), Colchester Road, Bures Hamlet, Essex (1911) to [1916], Little Street, Yoxford, Suffolk (1921), 1 Council House, Holly Lane, Blythe, Suffolk (1939), 1 Groveside, Yoxford, Suffolk [1963].  Occupation: Grocer’s Apprentice (1911), Grocer’s Assistant for C.W. French, Grocer of Yoxford (1921), Grocery and Provision’s Manager (1939).  Married: Hilda Ellen Clarke in 1928.  Service Record: Harry was conscripted on 16.10.1916 as Gnr.124980 with No. 42 Company, Royal Garrison Artillery, the unit protected the Inner Defences at Portsmouth in Hampshire.  He received his discharge on 15.11.1917 due to hypertrophy of the myocardium.[2]  Died: Ipswich, Suffolk on 3.11.1963.[3]

Notes – [1] Date of birth from the Baptism Register 19.12.1895, St Catherines Mission Church, Long Melford; 1939 Register for Blythe, Suffolk however, gives his date of birth as 31.10.1896. [2] Soldiers’ Documents, First World War ‘Burnt Documents’ [WO 363] under the name Harry Phil Meggs for medical details. [3] Date of death from the National Probate Calendar.
