Selected Biographies

Peacock, Charles Robert – Born: Alpheton, Suffolk on 5.12.1879.[1]  Parents: William Peacock (Horseman on Farm) and Harriet [née Osborne].  Family Connections: Brother to Frederick Peacock [b1882] and Rowland R. Peacock [b1896]; also, brother-in-law of Charles Herbert Seager [b1897] and uncle of Ernest Kitchener Peacock [b1916].  Home: Lion Cottage, Alpheton, Suffolk (1881), 20 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk (1891 to 1921), 28 Aldham Road, Hadleigh (1939).  Occupation: Soldier (1901 to 1921), General Labourer (1939).  Married: Maria Julia Ling [née Tatum] in 1927.  Service Record: Charles enlisted as Pte. C/198 with the Army Service Corps in 1900, being posted to South Africa and seeing action during the Second Anglo-Boer War in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.  He is believed to have served during the First World War and is recorded as a member of the Royal Defence Corps in 1921.[2]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1964. 

Peacock, Ernest Kitchener – Born: Hadleigh, Suffolk on 27.5.1916.[3]  Parents: Frederick Frank Peacock (Horseman on Farm) [see details below] and Jane Elizabeth [née Hynard] of Long Melford.  Family Connections: Nephew of Charles Robert Peacock [b1879] and Rowland P. Peacock [b1896].  Home: The Green, Bently, Suffolk (1921).  Married: Alice Trivett in 1938.  Service Record: Ernest served as L/Sgt.5825757 with 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment being posted to France as part of 8th Brigade, 3rd Division.   Died: Lance Sergeant Peacock was listed as missing presumed killed in action during the fighting retreat to Dunkirk on or about 1.6.1940.  He is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial Register [column 45].[4]  CWGC. 

Peacock, Frederick Frank – Born: Raydon, Suffolk in 1882.  Parents: William Peacock (Horseman on Farm) and Harriet [née Osborne].  Family Connections: Father to Ernest Kitchener Peacock [b1916]; also, brother of Charles Robert Peacock [b1879] and Rowland R. Peacock [b1896].  Home: 20 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk (1891), Military Barracks, Alderney, Channel Islands (1901), 141 Angel Street, Hadleigh (1911).  Occupation: Horseman on Farm (1901), Agricultural Labourer (1911).  Married: Jane Elizabeth Hynard of Long Melford in 1901.  Service Record: Fred was a volunteer with 3rd [Militia] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment in 1901.  During the First World War he served as Pte.3/10024 with 9th [Service] Battalion, Suffolks, being posted to France on 30.8.1915 as part of 71st Brigade, 24th Division and seeing action at the Battle of Loos at the end of the following month.[5]  Died: Private Peacock was listed as missing presumed killed in action on or about 13.9.1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing of the Somme [pier & face 1C & 2A], Picardie, France.[6]

Peacock, Rowland P. – Born: Hadleigh, Suffolk in 1896.  Parents: William Peacock (Horseman on Farm) and Harriet [née Osborne].  Family Connections: Brother to Charles Robert Peacock [b1879] and Frederick Peacock [b1882]; also, brother-in-law of Charles Herbert Seager [b1897] and uncle of Ernest Kitchener Peacock [b1916].  Home: 20 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk (1901 to 1911).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1911).  Service Record: Rowland enlisted as Pte’201037 with the London Regiment, receiving his discharge on 19.3.1918.[7]

Seager, Charles Herbert – Born: Hadleigh, Suffolk on 30.3.1897.[8]  Parents: Herbert William Seager (General Labourer) and Agnes Mary [née Buckeldee].  Family Connections: Brother-in-law of Charles Robert Peacock [b1879] and Rowland P. Peacock [b1896].  Home: 17 Angel Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk (1901 to 1911), 4 Threadneedle Street, Hadleigh (1921), 30 Benton Street, Hadleigh (1939), 19 Angel Street, Hadleigh [1965].  Occupation: General labourer (1911), Coconut Mat Maker for E. H. Price and Company (1921), Labourer for a Market Gardener (1939).  Married: Ivy Peacock in 1927.  Service Record: Charles enlisted on 15.9.1915 as Pte. G/18325 with the Duke of Cambridge’s Own [Middlesex Regiment], being posted to France where he was wounded in 1917.  The injury was severe enough for him to be issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged on 17.4.1917.[9]  Died: Hadleigh, Suffolk on 29.9.1965.[10]
