Row, Charles John Henry – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 24.12.1873.[1]  Parents: Charles John Newton Row (Stationmaster, later a Commission Agent and Cattle Merchant) and Rosetta [née Welham].  Family Connections: Father of Freda Maude Row [b1900] and brother to Herbert Newton Edward Row [b1884]; also, father-in-law of Arthur Valdemar, Kingston [b1898].  Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1881), The Laurels, Hall Street, Long Melford (1891), Lower Hall, Foxearth, Essex (1901), Chapel House, St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911 to 1921), The Nest, Nayland, Suffolk (1939), The Laurels, Hall Street, Long Melford [1951].  Occupation: Merchants Clerk (1891 to 1911), Corn Merchant’s Secretary for Frederick Branwhite and Sons (1921), Insurance Broker and Merchant (1939).  Married: Maude Marion Branwhite [d1936] in 1899 and Minnie Alice Lingley in 1938.  Service Record: Charles was the Honorary Treasurer and Sergeant in the Long Melford Volunteer Training Corps in 1915.  In 1916 he sat as a member of the Long Melford Suffolk Prisoners of War Relief Committee and from February 1918 as a member of the parish War Memorial Committee.  In 1922 he is recorded as Vice Chairman and one of the 14 vice-presidents of the Long Melford Ex-Service Men’s Club.[2]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 2.3.1951.[3]

Row, Miss Doreen Frances – Born: Sudbury, Suffolk on 18.5.1923.[4]  Parents: Herbert Newton Edward Row [see below for details] and Margaret Dora [née Waters].  Family Connections: Brother to Findon Douglas Newton Row [b1914] and Samuel Newton Row [b1916]; also, niece of Charles Henry Newton Row [b1873] and cousin of Freda Maude Row [b1900].  Home: 12a Church Street, Sudbury (1939).  Married: Peter Austen Brown in 1951.  Service Record: Doreen joined the Women’s Land Army for West Suffolk on 17.8.1942 as No.95032.[5] Died: Suffolk in 1964.

Row, Findon Douglas Newton – Born: Great Cornard, Suffolk on 4.12.1914.[6]  Parents: Herbert Newton Edward Row [see below for details] and Margaret Dora [née Waters].  Family Connections: Brother to Samuel Newton Row [b1916] and Doreen Frances Row [b1923]; also, nephew of Charles Henry Newton Row [b1873] and cousin of Freda Maude Row [b1900].  Home: North View, 4 York Road, Sudbury, Suffolk (1921), 12a Church Street, Sudbury (1939).  Occupation: Textile Designer (1939).  Service Record: Findon served during the Second World War as Sgt.1184110 with No.12 (Bomber) Squadron, based at RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire.  The squadron was equipped with Wellington bombers and flew missions over Europe including attacks on German ports, Berlin, and the Ruhr.  Died: Sergeant Row was killed in action during a bombing raid on 10.4.1942 and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial and the Sudbury War Memorial.[7]

Row, Miss Freda Maude – Born: Foxearth, Essex in 1900.  Parents: Charles John Henry Row (Insurance Broker) [see details above] and Maude Marion [née Branwhite].  Family Connections: Niece of Herbert Newton Edward Row [b1884]; also, cousin of Findon Douglas Newton Row [b1914], Samuel Newton Row [b1916] and Doreen Frances Row [b1923].  Home: Lower Hall, Foxearth, Essex (1901), Chapel House, St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911), 43 Woodstock Road, Ealing, Middlesex [1930], 123 Berkshire Gardens, Wood Green, Middlesex [1945], 10 Abbeygate Street, Colchester, Essex [1960].  Married: Arthur Valdemar Kingston in 1926.  Service Record: Freda is recorded as a member of the Women’s Land Army in 1918.[8]  Died: Colchester, Essex on 12.8.1960.[9]

Row, Herbert Newton Edward – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 9.4.1884.[10]  Parents: Charles John Newton Row (Stationmaster, later Commission Agent, and Cattle Merchant) and Rosetta [née Welham].  Family Connections: Father to Findon Douglas Newton Row [b1914], Samuel Newton Row [b1916] and Doreen Frances Row [b1923]; also, brother to Charles John Henry Row [b1873] and uncle of Freda Maude Row [b1900].  Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1881), The Laurels, Hall Street, Long Melford (1891), living with George Hopewell (brother-in-Law) at Melford House, Henley Road, Ipswich, Suffolk (1901), The Laurels, Hall Street, Long Melford (1911), North View, 4 York Road, Sudbury, Suffolk [1918] to (1921).  Occupation: Merchant’s Clerk (1891), Insurance Clerk (1901 and 1911), Tobacconist (1921).  Married: Margaret Dora Waters in 1912.  Service Record: By 1914 Herbert is recorded as CSM. M2/035391 in the Mechanical Transport Section of the Army Service Corps and being posted to France from 14.7.1915.  In November 1917 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, posted to Italy from 2.2.1918 to 25.4.1919 with No. 66 Squadron where he flew a series of fighter aircraft, including the Sopwith Pup, Avro 504, and the Sopwith Camel.  He was wounded on 10.6.1918 but was passed fit for duty two months later.  On 1.4.1918 Herbert had moved to the Royal Air Force receiving his discharge in May 1919.  In 1922 he is recorded as one of the 14 vice-presidents of the Long Melford Ex-Service Men’s Club.[11]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1975.

Row, Samuel Newton – Born: Sudbury, Suffolk on 24.2.1916.  Parents: Herbert Newton Edward Row [see above for details] and Margaret Dora [née Waters].  Family Connections: Brother to Findon Douglas Newton Row [b1914] and Doreen Frances Row [b1923]; also, nephew of Charles Henry Newton Row [b1873] and cousin of Freda Maude Row [b1900].  Home: North View, 4 York Road, Sudbury, Suffolk (1921).  Married: Amelia Jessie May Farmer in 1943.  Service Record: Samuel is recorded as an Officer in the Royal Navy in 1951.  By 1956 he is listed as a Senior Commissioned Airman in 1956, and in 1961 as a Lieutenant-Commander.[12]  Died: Bures Hamlet, Essex in 2004.
