Salvage, Bertram Harry – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 27.9.1885.[1]  Parents: Henry Salvage (Gardener at Kentwell Hall) and Eliza Anne [née Snell] [d1895]; [married to Mary Ann Read in 1896].  Family Connections: Brother to Horace Charles Salvage [b1880] and Percy Frederick Salvage [b1889]; also, half-brother to William Feltham Salvage [b1901] and brother-in-law of Frederick Ernest Eady [b1883].  Home: Living with Charles Day (uncle) in Bridge Street, Long Melford (1891), The Green, Long Melford (1901), living with Walter Salvage (uncle) at 2 Buckingham Terrace, Notting Hill, London (1911), Orchard Cottage, Common Lane, Thundersley, Essex [1917], 5 North Road, Southend-on-Sea, Essex (1921), 36 Tintern Avenue, Westcliffe-on-Sea, Essex (1939).  Occupation: Gardener (1901 and 1911), Munitions Worker [1917], Gardener (1921 to 1939).  Married: Ellen Matilda Louise Cook in 1914.  Service Record: Bertram was conscripted on 27.11.1917 as Gnr.178940 with 2nd Reserve Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery, transferring to 353rd Siege Battery, RGA on 28.3.1918, before being posted to France with 164th Siege Battery, RGA on 18.5.1918.  He received his discharge in February 1919.[2]  Died: Rochford, Essex in 1942.

Salvage, Horace Charles – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 24.7.1880.[3]  Parents: Henry Salvage (Estate Gardener at Kentwell Hall) and Eliza Anne [née Snell] [d1895]; [married to Mary Ann Read in 1896].  Family Connections: Brother to Bertram Henry Salvage [b1885] and Percy Frederick Salvage [b1889] and half-brother of William Feltham Salvage [b1901]; also, brother-in-law of Frederick Ernest Eady [b1883].  Home: Bridge Street, Long Melford (1881 to 1911), Church Street, Lavenham, Suffolk [1914 and 1915], Nethergate Street, Clare, Suffolk (1939) to [1949].  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1901 and 1911), Farm Foreman (1939).  Married: Jane Rogers [d1934] in 1911 and Esther Twitchett [née Parker] in 1935.  Service Record: Horace enlisted in 1915 as Pte. G/20683 with 6th Supernumerary Company, 5th Battalion, The Queen’s Own [Royal West Kent] Regiment.  His brief period with the Battalion was spent in England and on 25.5.1916 he was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged, due to sickness.  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 10.1.1949.[4]

Salvage, Percy Frederick – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 25.2.1889.[5]  Parents: Henry Salvage (Gardener at Kentwell Hall) and Eliza Anne [née Snell] [d1895]; [married to Mary Ann Read in 1896].  Family Connections: Brother to Horace Charles Salvage [b1880] and Bertram Henry Salvage [b1885]; also, half-brother to William Feltham Salvage [b1901] and brother-in-law of Frederick Ernest Eady [b1883].  Home: Bridge Street, Long Melford (1891), The Green, Long Melford (1901), 89 Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith, Middlesex (1911), Section House, Padderswick Road, Hammersmith [1917], The Stores, Dunton Hill, Dunmow, Essex [1919], 226 Twickenham Road. Isleworth, Middlesex (1939) to [1965].  Occupation: Police Constable (1911) to [1917], Timekeeper (1921 to 1939).  Married: Winifred Ella Mann in 1917.  Service Record: Percy was conscripted on 12.1.1917 as Private, later Cpl.554054 with 2/16th [County of London] Battalion [Queen’s Westminster Rifles], London Regiment.  He was posted to Egypt from 6.7.1917 to 10.2.1919, joining 2/13th [County of London] Battalion [Princess Louise’s Kensington], London Regiment, as part of 179th [2/4th London] Brigade, 60th [2/2nd London] Division on 28.6.1918.  Corporal Salvage was discharged in April 1919.[6]  Died: Hounslow, Middlesex on 20.4.1965.[7]

Salvage, William Feltham – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 10.8.1901.[8]  Parents: Henry Salvage (Gardener at Kentwell Hall) and Mary Ann [née Read] [second wife].  Family Connections: Half-brother to Horace Charles Salvage [b1880], Bertram Henry Salvage [b1885] and Percy Frederick Salvage [b1889]; also, brother-in-law of Frederick Ernest Eady [b1883].  Home: The Cottage, Kentwell Hall, Long Melford (1911), 14 Rojack Road, Honor Oak Park, Lewisham, London [1934], 22 Queenswood Road, Sydenham, London [1936 to 1939].[9]  Occupation: Labourer [1919].  Married: Edna Kinsey Snowball in 1926.  Service Record: William was attested on 20.2.1918 as Boy Sailor No. J86429 with the Royal Navy, serving on the Arethusa class light cruiser HMS Penelope from 15.11.1918 to 4.3.1919.  He was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1934 having reached the rank of Leading Signalman.  A Petty Officer by the outbreak of the Second World War, he continued with the Navy until his discharge in September 1945.[10]  Died: Ipswich, Suffolk in 1991.

Eady, Frederick Ernest – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 24.3.1883.[11]  Parent: Rose Eady (Horsehair Weaver).  Family Connections: Half-brother to Willie Salter [b1899], Arthur Salter [b1905] and Berte Charles Salter [b1907]; also, brother-in-law of Horace Charles Salvage [b1880], Bertram Henry Salvage [b1885], Percy Frederick Salvage [b1889], William Feltham Salvage [b1901] and Ernest Albert Lambert [b1884].  Home: Cock and Bell Lane, Long Melford (1891), 7 Chapel Green, Long Melford (1911 to 1939).  Occupation: Domestic Gardener (1911), Maltster [1916], Galenical Worker for Stafford Allen and Sons, Distillers of Herbal Oils (1939).  Married: Jessie Salvage in 1910.  Service Record: Frederick was conscripted on 24.6.1916 as Dvr. T/278692 with the Army Service Corps, being mobilised on 4.12.1916 and joining 664th [Horse Transport] Company, ASC at Park Royal in London.  By August 1917 he had been moved to 668th [HT] Company before transferring as Pte.483786 to ‘D’ Company, 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment.  He was posted to Egypt, however within weeks of landing had been diagnosed with hysteria, spending the next three months in hospital, and not returning to his unit until early April 1918.  It should be noted that Frederick was a slightly built man, and at five feet tall and a little over eight stones in weight, he barely qualified for active service at all, being categorized on enlistment as CI.  In October 1919 he was transferred to 999th [HT] Company, Royal Army Service Corps, returning to England in January 1920.  Shortly before leaving Egypt however, he contracted malaria suffering two further attacks in 1920.[12]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1967.

Ponder, Bertie William – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 18.2.1890.[13]  Parent: Martha Ann Ponder.  Family Connections: Father to William Bertie Ponder [b1913] and father-in-law of William Sydney James Ford [b1909]; also, brother of Ernest Harry Ponder [b1893] and cousin of George Henry Sampson Ponder [b1894], William James Ponder [b1896] and Sydney Lewis Claude Ponder [b1899].  Home: Bridge Street, Long Melford (1891), Alpheton Tye, Suffolk (1901 to 1921), Lodge Farm, High Street, Long Melford (1939).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1911 to 1921), Horseman on Farm (1939).  Married: Annie Elizabeth Salvage in 1912.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Tribunal on 24.7.1916 Bertie’s employer Mr J. Underhill of Alpheton requested an exemption from military service on his horseman’s behalf, which was granted conditionally.[14]  It is not known if the exemption was ever revoked as no extant military record can be found.  Died: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk 1986.
