Selected Biographies

Segers, Miss Alice Miles – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk in 1852.  Parents: Charles Segers (Butcher) and Betsey [née Miles].  Family Connections: Aunt of Leonard Kersey Segers [b1886], Miles Constable Segers [b1886] and Olive Emmie Seward [née Segers] [b1890].  Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1861) to [1930].  Service Record: Alice was a volunteer with the British Red Cross Society and a member of the Red Cross Working Party in Long Melford from October 1916 to October 1918.  At the end of the War, she was awarded the Red Cross Workers Badge.[1]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 13.3.1930.[2]

Segers, Leonard Kersey – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 20.11.1886.[3]  Parents: Frederick Charles Segers (Butcher) and Frances [née Siggers].  Family Connections: Brother to Olive Emmie Segers [b1890]; also, brother-in-law of Edward Willoughby Saward [b1889] and nephew of Alice Miles Segers [b1852].  Home: St Catherines Road, Long Melford [1886], Hall Street, Long Melford (1891), The Grammar School, St Christopher Lane, Sudbury, Suffolk (1901), Ingatestone, Essex [1910], visiting Herbert Ledger at 68 The Lawn, Shepherds Bush Green, Hammersmith, Middlesex (1911), Crows Farm, Belchamp Walter, Essex (1921 to 1939), Tree Tops, Polstead, Essex [1978].  Occupation: Butcher (1911), Farmer of Crow and Rippingale Farms (1921 to 1939).[4]  Married: Mary Elizabeth Pate [née Sizer] [d1948] in 1911 and Bertha Alen Hollex [b1915] in 1949.  Service Record: Leonard was conscripted Pte.60455 with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers gaining promotion to Corporal, later transferring as Cpl.604239 to the Labour Corps.[5]  Died: Polstead, Essex on 20.6.1978.[6]

M2/105847 with the Mechanical Transport Section of the Army Service Corps, being posted to France from 19.8.1915 and receiving his discharge in 1919.[9]  Died: Rochford, Essex on 11.9.1975.[10]

Saward, Mrs Olive Emmie [née Segers] – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 15.9.1890.[11]  Parents: Frederick Charles Segers (Butcher) and Frances [née Siggers].  Family Connections: Sister to Leonard Kersey Segers [b1886] and niece of Alice Miles Segers [b1852].  Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1891 to 1901) and [1916].  Occupation: Draper’s Assistant (1911), Ballards Gore, Great Stambridge, Rochford, Essex [1975].  Married: Edward Willoughby Saward in 1917.  Service Record: Mrs Saward was a volunteer with the British Red Cross Society and a member of the Red Cross Working Party in Long Melford from September 1916 to October 1918.[12]  Died: Rochford, Essex on 8.6.1975.[13]
