It is not known if Arthur saw service during the First World War as no definitive record has been found.

Smith, Clifford Cyril – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 26.5.1892.[7]  Parents: William Durwin Smith (Assistant Manager at Horsehair Factory) and Laura [née Downey].  Family Connections: Half-brother to Edward Stanley Smith [b1899]; also, nephew of Frederick Durwin Smith [b1869], Albert Durwin Smith [b1870], Oswald Charles Durwin Smith [b1872], Walter Henry Smith [b1874], Arthur Smith [b1876] and Edward Durwin Smith [b1877], and brother-in-law of Arthur Hansford [b1887].  Home: Hall Street, Long Melford (1901 and 1911), 9 Leopold Street, Lambeth, London (1921), 285 Cavendish Road, Balham, Surrey (1939) to [1955].  Occupation: Grocers Assistant (1911) and [1914], Grocer (1921), Grocer and Provision Dealer and an Air Raid Warden (1939).  Married: Edith Maude Sparrow in 1919.  Service Record: Clifford enlisted on 2.9.1914 as Gnr.3939 with ‘A’ Battery, LXXXIV Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, being posted to France from 26.7.1915, as part of 18th [Eastern] Division.  In July 1916 he was promoted to Acting Bombardier, seeing action throughout the five months of the Somme Offensive and at Arras the following spring.  In May Clifford contracted nephrites while in the trenches, severe enough for him to be hospitalized in England from August to November 1917.  The effect on his system was so debilitating that he was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged on 25.2.1918 as ‘permanently unfit’.[8]  Died: St John’s Hospital, Battersea, London on 5.2.1955.[9]

Smith, Frederick C. – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk in 1868.  Parents: George Smith (Plate Layer for Great Eastern Railway) and Elizabeth [née Younger].  Family Connections: Brother to Arthur George Smith [b1863], Herbert Charles Smith [b1870] and Harry Smith [b1876]; also, brother-in-law of Thomas Pittock [b1879].  Home: High Street, Long Melford (1871 and 1881), Walton Street, Sculcoates, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire (1911).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1881), Police Constable (1901 and 1911).  Married: Mary Louisa Oldman in 1899.  Service Record: Frederick enlisted in 1885 as Pte.1384 with 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, posted to Egypt from 1889 to 1891 and India from 1891 to 1893, being discharged in 1897.  It is not known if he saw service during the First World War as no definitive record has been found.[16]

Smith, George Archibald – Born: Sudbury, Suffolk on 1.11.1888.[19]  Parents: Alfred Smith of Long Melford (House Painter) and Alice [née Butcher].  Family Connections: Brother to William Stanley Smith [b1887], Alfred Oliver Smith [b1890], Harold Cecil Smith [b1894], Lancelot James Smith [b1897] and Edwin Leonard Smith [b1902].  Home: Clifton Villa, Lavenham Road, Sudbury, Suffolk (1891), Village Street, Toppesfield, Essex (1901), 66 Holmside, Gillingham, Kent (1939).  Occupation: Civil Servant (1939).  Married: Eva Windsor in 1911.  Service Record: George enlisted in 1905 as Spr.14911 with the Royal Engineers, being promoted to Sergeant and later re-numbered as 1851921.  He served throughout the First World War and was posted to Singapore from 1913 to July 1916.  After the War he was given postings in Malta and again to Singapore before being discharged in 1931.[20]  Died: Worthing, Sussex in 1979.

Smith, Harold Cecil – Born: Toppesfield, Essex on 15.8.1894.  Parents: Alfred Smith of Long Melford (House Painter) and Alice [née Butcher].  Family Connections: Brother to William Stanley Smith [b1887], George Archibald Smith [b1888], Alfred Oliver Smith [b1890], Lancelot James Smith [b1897] and Edwin Leonard Smith [b1902].  Home: Village Street, Toppesfield, Essex (1901), 3 Rifle Hill, Black Notley, Essex (1911), 78 Nolla Gardens, Chelmsford, Essex [1968].  Occupation: Iron Casement Fitter (1911).  Service Record: Harold’s unit has been identified through the cap badge on his service photograph as The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment).  Without a definitive military record, it has not been possible to identify his home battalion.  Died: Chelmsford, Essex on 29.3.1968.[23]

Smith, John – Born: Buxhall, Suffolk in 1874.  Parents: William Smith (Agricultural Labourer) and Eliza [née Otterwell].  Home: Buxhall, Suffolk (1881 and 1891), High Street, Long Melford (1901), a Servant at Inholmes, Woodlands St Mary, Hungerford, Berkshire (1911).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1891), Servant on Farm (1901), Butler (1911), Stockman and Yardman for George Deeks of High Street Farm [1917].  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in February 1917, John’s employer George Deeks applied for exemption on his behalf, which was granted on the condition he joined the Volunteer Training Corps and that a substitute be found to take his place in the Army.[28]  It is not known if such a substitute was forthcoming.  No definitive military record has been found.
