Sore, Albert – Born: Hartest, Suffolk in 1877. Parents: Arthur George Sore (Miller) and Eliza [née Sargent] of Long Melford. Family Connections: Brother to Otley Joe Sore [b1879], Ernest George Sore of Long Melford [b1882], Ezekiel Robert Sore [b1884], Edwin Francis Sore [b1887], Thomas Maurice Sore [b1892] and Horace Charles Sore [b1894]; also, cousin of Ezekiel Thomas Sore [b1875], Charles Sore [b1880], Horace Mumford Sore [b1883], Frank Sore [b1886], Arthur Sydney Sore [b1893], Bertie Leeks Sore [b1897] and Harry Sore [b1898]. Service Record: Albert enlisted in 1894 as Pte.4012 with 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, transferring to 1st Battalion and posted to India between 1899 and 1904. Rising to the rank of Corporal in 1905 he served in South Africa between 1904 and 1908, Gibraltar from 1908 to 1911, returning to India until his discharge in September 1912 while serving with 2nd Battalion.[2] Died: Albert died of chronic nephritis and heart failure at the Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka, Madras, India on 15.5.1926.[3]

Family Connections: Brother to Ezekiel Thomas Sore [b1875], Horace Mumford Sore [b1883], Frank Sore [b1886], Bertie Leeks Sore [b1897] and Harry Sore [b1898]; also, cousin of Albert Sore [b1877], Otley Joe Sore [b1879], Ernest George Sore of Long Melford [b1882], Ezekiel Robert Sore [b1884], Edwin Francis Sore [b1887], Thomas Maurice Sore [b1892] and Horace Sore [b1892]. Married: Ellen E. Buckle in 1920. Service Record: Although no definitive military record has been found, Arthur may have enlisted as Cpl.12211 with 7th [Service] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. If this assumption is correct then he was posted to France from 30.5.1915, as part of 35th Brigade in 12th (Eastern) Division, seeing action during the Somme Offensive of 1916. He would have been later transferred as Cpl.32081 to 15th [Suffolk Yeomanry] Battalion, Suffolks and discharged in 1919.[5] Died: New South Wales, Australia on 19.4.1967.[6]

Service Record: Ernest enlisted in September 1899 as Pte.6126 with 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, Essex Regiment, transferring to 12th [Prince of Wales’s Royal] Lancers in November 1900. He later re-enlisted as Pte.2561 with 1st [King’s] Dragoon Guards, Corps of Dragoons, which at the outbreak of the War was stationed in India. The Dragoons landed in France in November 1914 as part of 8th [Lucknow] Cavalry Brigade, 1st Indian Cavalry Division, seeing action at the Battle of Festubert in May 1915.[13] Died: Ernest Sore died of wounds on 3.6.1915 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing [panel 3], Ypres, Belgium and on the Sudbury War Memorial, Suffolk.[14]
Sore, Ezekiel Robert – Born: Great Cornard, Suffolk on 6.9.1884.[15] Parents: Arthur George Sore (Miller) and Eliza [née Sargent] of Long Melford. Service Record: Ezekiel enlisted as Pte.5838 with 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, being posted to France from 21.12.1915 as part of 76th Brigade, 3rd Division. His unit saw action during the Somme Offensive of 1916, Arras, and the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, and in the final year of the War, at the Battles of the First and Second Somme, the Lys and the Hindenburg Line. He received his discharge in 1919.[16] Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 10.8.1957.[17]

Service Record: Ezekiel enlisted in 1896 as Drummer Pte.4487 with 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, posted to India from 1898 to 1902, South Africa from 1902 to 1908, Gibraltar from 1908 to 1911 and India from 1911 to 1914. During the First World War he was posted to Mesopotamia, as part of 18th [Begaum] Brigade, 6th [Poona] Division, Indian Expeditionary Force serving from 6.11.1914 to 30.6.1916. He was captured on 29.4.1916 together with 9,000 others, by Ottoman Turk forces at the fall of Kut-Al-Amara, a walled town on the Tigris River 100 miles south-east of Baghdad. British and Indian troops had been besieged in Kut since December of the previous year.[18] Died: Ezekiel died of dysentery while a prisoner of war at Mardi Kaps sometime in June 1916. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial [panel 10], Iraq and the Gazeley War Memorial in Suffolk. His Service Record notes that his next of kin were not informed of his death until December 1918.[19]
Sore, Frank – Born: Cowlinge, Suffolk on 23.11.1886.[20] Parents: Charles Ezekiel Sore of Long Melford (Miller) and Ann [née Leeks]. If this assumption is correct then he would have been posted to France from 25.7.1915 as part of 53rd Brigade, 18th [Eastern] Division, seeing action during the Somme Offensive of 1916. He would later have transferred to 7th [Service] Battalion, Suffolks and been discharged in March 1919.[21] Died: Newmarket, Suffolk in 1948.

Sore, Horace Charles – Born: Sudbury, Suffolk on 30.7.1894.[24] Parents: Arthur George Sore (Miller) and Eliza [née Sargent] of Long Melford. Family Connections: Brother to Albert Sore [b1877], Otley Joe Sore [b1879], Ernest George Sore of Long Melford [b1882], Ezekiel Robert Sore [b1884], Edwin Francis Sore [b1887] and Thomas Maurice Sore [b1892]; also, cousin of Ezekiel Thomas Sore [b1875], Charles Sore [b1880], Horace Mumford Sore [b1883], Frank Sore [b1886], Arthur Sydney Sore [b1893], Bertie Leeks Sore [b1897] and Harry Sore [b1898]. Home: 82 East Street, Sudbury, Suffolk (1901 and 1911). Occupation: Coconut Mat Weaver for Armes and Son of Sudbury (1911). Service Record: Horace enlisted in 1911 as Pte.1220 with ‘D’ Company, 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment [Territorial]. Horace was recalled to his battalion on 5.8.1914, which had been restyled as 1/5th Battalion, Suffolks. In January 1915 he qualified as a signaller and was transferred as Spr.1914, later Pnr.528081 to 54th Divisional Signals Company, Royal Engineers, being posted to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 28.7.1915 as part of 54th [East Anglian] Division. The Division was engaged in defending the southern section of the Suez Canal for much of 1916, before forming part of the invasion force into Palestine in 1917 and seeing action initially at the First Battle of Gaza in March.[25] Died: Horace was killed in action on 19.4.1917 during the Second Battle of Gaza and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial [panel 9] and the on Sudbury War Memorial in Suffolk.[26]

He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal seeing action at the First and Second Battles of Bellewaarde in 1915. He was transferred to 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, Suffolks, and on 13.2.1916 was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged as ‘permanently unfit’.[28] Died: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on 1.6.1963.[29]
Sore, Otley Joe – Born: Birdbrook, Essex on 9.9.1879.[30] Parents: Arthur George Sore (Miller) and Eliza [née Sargent] of Long Melford. Family Connections: Brother to Albert Sore [b1877], Ernest George Sore of Long Melford [b1882], Ezekiel Robert Sore [b1884], Edwin Francis Sore [b1887], Thomas Maurice Sore [b1892] and Horace Charles Sore [b1894]; also, cousin of Ezekiel Thomas Sore [b1875], Charles Sore [b1880], Horace Mumford Sore [b1883], Frank Sore [b1886], Arthur Sydney Sore [b1893], Bertie Leeks Sore [b1897] and Harry Sore [b1898]. He was transferred as Cpl.TR/9/4057 to 26th Training Reserve Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged on 21.9.1916 due to wounds.[31] Died: Colchester, Essex in 1954.
Sore, Percy William – Born: Glemsford, Suffolk on 31.10.1899.[32] Parents: Charles King Sore of Long Melford (Coconut Mat Maker] and Albina [née Underwood].
