Stanhope, Arthur John – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 10.4.1877.[1]  Parents: James Stanhope (Agricultural Labourer) and Eliza [née Hurrell].  Family Connections: Brother to Harry Stanhope [1859], and uncle of Percy James Stanhope [b1886], Bertie Stanhope [b1897], Charles John Stanhope [b1900] and Robert James Stanhope [b1897].  Home: Westgate Street/Lane, Long Melford (1881 and 1891), Little St Marys, Long Melford (1901), Crown Inn, Hall Street, Long Melford (1911), emigrated to Canada [1913], 35th Avenue, Calgary, Alberta, Canada [1914].  Occupation: Iron Foundry Labourer (1891), Carpenter (1901), Landlord of the Crown Inn, Long Melford (1911).  Married: Kate Elizabeth Clarke in 1899.  Service Record: Before 1912 Arthur served for five years with 2nd [Volunteer] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.  He enlisted on 20.7.1915 as Pte.435830 with 50th [Calgary] Battalion, part of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force, being posted to France from 11.8.1916 with 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division.  Private Stanhope saw action towards the end of 1916 at the Battle of Ancre Heights, in 1917 at Vimy Ridge, Lens, Hill 70 and Passchendaele, and in 1918 at Amiens, the Drocourt-Quéant Line, Canal du Nord, Valenciennes and the Sambre.[2]  Died: Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1941.

Stanhope, Ernest Chesterfield – Born: Hendon, Middlesex in 1893.  Parents: Alfred Ernest Stanhope of Long Melford (Waiter) and Mary Ann [née Sullivan].  Family Connections: Brother to Harold Scudamore Mahon Stanhope [b1891].  Home: 36 Prospect Road, Childs Hill, Hendon, Middlesex (1901), living with mother and James Downham (stepfather) at All Saints School House, Childs Hill, Hendon (1911), 109 Granville Road, Cricklewood, Middlesex [1918].  Occupation: Van Boy (1911).  Service Record: Ernest enlisted in 1915 as Pte.1824 with 5th [Reserve] Battalion, Duke of Cambridge’s Own [Middlesex] Regiment, being posted to France on 20.1.1915 and transferring as Gnr.90433 to ‘A’ Battery, 110th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery as part of 25th Division.  He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917[8] and raised to the rank of Corporal.[9]  Died: Corporal Stanhope died of his wounds on 21.4.1918 at one of the Casualty Clearing Stations at Mendinghem and is buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery [grave ref: X.B.29], West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.[10]

Stanhope, Harold Scudamore Mahon – Born: Holloway, London on 24.4.1891.[11]  Parents: Alfred Ernest Stanhope of Long Melford (Waiter) and Mary Ann [née Sullivan].  Family Connections: Brother to Ernest Chesterfield Stanhope [b1893].  Home: 36 Prospect Road, Childs Hill, Hendon, Middlesex (1901), living with mother and James Downham (stepfather) at All Saints School House, Childs Hill, Hendon (1911), 7 Heath Passage, Hampstead, London [1918].  Occupation: Compositor [1906 to 1914].  Married: Eva Crampton in 1912.  Service Record: Harold enlisted on 3.6.1914 with 7th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge’s Own [Middlesex] Regiment, transferring on 18.9.1914 to 2/19th [City of London] Battalion, London Regiment and posted to the Western Front on 24.9.1915 as part of 180th Brigade, 60th [2/2nd London] Division.  By December 1916 he moved with his unit to Salonika where he saw action at the Battle of Doiran in the Spring of 1917.  In July he was posted to Egypt taking part in the Palestine Campaign, seeing action again at the Third Battle of Gaza and the capture of Jerusalem and Jericho.  On 27.4.1918 he transferred as No.318097 to No.3 Cadet Wing, Royal Air Force while still in Egypt, graduating in September as a Flying Cadet, before being placed on the RAF Reserve in April 1919.[12]  Died: Gloucester, Gloucestershire in 1976.

Stanhope, Harry – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 19.6.1859.  Parents: James Stanhope (Agricultural Labourer) and Eliza [née Hurrell].  Family Connections: Father to Percy James Stanhope [b1886] and brother of Arthur John Stanhope [b1877]; also, grandfather of William Harry Stanhope Theobald [b1899], uncle of Robert James Stanhope [b1897], and father-in-law of Edward Ballentine Wright [b1880] and George Henry Lefley [b1883].  Home: Westgate Street, Long Melford (1861 to 1871), Hall Street, Long Melford (1881), The Green, Long Melford (1891 to 1901), White Hart Inn, St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911) to [1923].  Occupation: Horsehair Weaver (1871), Iron Foundry Labourer (1881), Wagon Painter (1891 to 1901), Landlord of The White Hart Inn (1911) to [1923].  Married: Zillah Theobald in 1878.  Criminal Record: Youthful devilment led 10-year-old Harry into trouble, when with a group of his friends he was charged on 17.9.1869 at the Melford Petty Sessions with ‘stealing a quarter peck of nuts growing in an orchard at Parsonage Farm in the occupation of Thomas Byford.  The boy’s parents agreed that all should be given the birch, with Harry as one of the younger miscreants receiving six strokes.[13]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 24.8.1923.[14]

Stanhope, James – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 19.4.1885.[15]  Parents: George Stanhope (Bricklayer) and Emma Jane [née Gridley].  Family Connections: Brother to John Stanhope [b1877]; also, cousin of Thomas Clarence Stanhope [b1899] and brother-in-law of Cecil George Brooks [b1890].  Home: High Street, Long Melford (1891 and 1901), Military Barracks in Egypt (1911), High Street, Long Melford [1914].  Occupation: Coconut Mat Maker (1901), Soldier [1902 to 1916].  Married: Harriet Ann Prigg in 1915.  Service Record: James gave a false age when joining the army in 1902 being only 16, attesting as Pte.6050 of 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, being posted to India in 1905, Malta 1909 and Egypt in 1911, receiving his discharge in March 1914.  He was recalled to the Colours and transferred as Pte.3/9742 to 8th [Service] Battalion, Suffolks, posted to France from 25.7.1915 as part of 53rd Brigade, 18th [Eastern] Division, seeing action on the Somme at the Battle of Delville Wood, which began on 15.7.1916.[16]  Died: Private Stanhope was killed in action on 21.7.1916 at Delville Wood and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme [pier and face 1c and 2a], Somme, France and on the Long Melford War Memorial.[17]

Stanhope, John – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 15.12.1877.[18]  Parents: George Stanhope (Bricklayer) and Emma Jane [née Gridley].  Family Connections: Brother to James Stanhope [b1885]; also, cousin of Thomas Clarence Stanhope [b1899] and brother-in-law of Cecil George Brooks [b1890].  Home: High Street, Long Melford (1881 to 1939).  Occupation: Agricultural Labourer (1891 to 1921), Maltster’s Labourer (1939).  Married: Ellen Elizabeth Potter [née Deeks] in 1901.  Service Record: Enlisting on 28.1.1915 as Pte.202540 with 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, John was transferred to 1st Battalion, Suffolks and posted to Salonika from 24.10.1915 as part of 84th Brigade, 28th Division.  The first six months for his battalion was spent in hacking trenches into the rocky soil and laying out copious amounts of barbed wire.  By June 1916 the Division began to advance on the Bulgarian Army in the Struma valley.  The weather was blisteringly hot, and the line of march infested with flies and mosquitoes.  British forces had not yet been supplied with mosquito nets and consequently hundreds of men contracted malaria.  It was probably at this time that Private Stanhope also fell prey to the disease.  It was due to the on-going effects of this illness that he was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged in March 1919.[19]  Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1964.

Stanhope, Percy James – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 6.12.1886.[20]  Parents: Harry Stanhope (Wagon Painter, later Landlord of the White Hart Inn) [see details above] and Zillah [née Theobald].  Family Connections: Brother to William Harold Stanhope [b1889], Bertie Stanhope [b1897] and Charles John Stanhope [b1900], uncle of William Harry Stanhope [b1899] and nephew of Arthur John Stanhope [b1877]; also, cousin of Robert James Stanhope [b1897], and brother-in-law of Edward Ballentine Wright [b1880] and George Henry Lefley [b1883].  Home: The Green, Long Melford (1891 and 1901), White Hart Inn, St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911),[21] Red Hospital, Sudbury, Suffolk (1921), 7 Southgate Street, Long Melford (1939) to [1947].  Occupation: Backhouse Boy (1901), Bricklayer (1911), Carpenter for Clement Theobald and Sons of Long Melford [1915] to (1921).  Married: Mary Ann Lumley in 1927.  Service Record: Between 1911 and 1915 Percy served with the Army Service Corps of Essex [Territorial].  He enlisted on 26.7.1915 as Gnr.103551 with LXXXI [Howitzer] Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and was posted to France from 16.1.1916 to 8.8.1918 as part of 17th (Northern) Division.  This artillery brigade saw action at the Battles of Albert and Delville Wood during Somme Offensive of 1916, at the First and Second Battles of the Scarpe the following April and at the First Battle of Passchendaele in October 1917.  On 18.10.1917 Gunner Stanhope suffered a gunshot wound to his neck, being treated at the General Hospital in Wimereux, near Boulogne.  By early November he was fit enough to be transferred to CLIX Brigade, RFA in 35th Division.[22]  Towards the end of March his new brigade was in a desperate action at Bapaume, one of the many defensive battles of the German Spring Offensive of 1918.  On 11.7.1918 he was wounded for a second time, by a gunshot wound to his chest, this time being treated at No. 3 Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Esquelbecq, about twelve miles south of Dunkirk.  Percy was issued with a Silver War Badge and discharged due to the continuing effect of his wounds on 5.10.1918.[23]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk in 1947.

Stanhope, Robert John – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 24.11.1897.[24]  Parents: William Stanhope (Police Constable) and Alice [née Kerley].  Family Connections: Nephew of Harry Stanhope [b1859] and Arthur John Stanhope [b1877]; also, cousin of Percy James Stanhope [b1886], William Harold Stanhope [b1889], Bertie Stanhope [b1897] and Charles John Stanhope [b1900].  Home: 3 Hornsey Chambers, Southwell Road, Clapton, London [1896], 31 Hemstal Road, Hampstead, Middlesex (1901), 28 Arkwright Road, Hampstead (1911), 38 Belsize Park, Hampstead [1919 to 1930], 24 Cheviot Gardens, Hendon, Middlesex [1931] to (1939).  Occupation: Under Gardener (1921), Gardener (1939).  Service Record: Robert enlisted in 1915 as Pte.17760 with 1st Battalion, Prince Albert’s [Somerset Light Infantry] and posted to France on 13.7.1915 as part of 11th Brigade, 4th Division.  He also fought with 7th and 8th [Service] Battalions while stationed on the Western Front, receiving a gunshot wound to his forearm.  He was placed on the Army Reserve in February 1919.[25] Died: Willesden Hospital, London on 4.11.1967.[26]

Stanhope, Thomas Clarence – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 22.5.1899.[27]  Parents: Thomas Stanhope (Labourer) and Jane [née Grice] (Horsehair Weaver).  Family Connections: Nephew of John Stanhope [b1877] and James Stanhope [b1886].  Home: Westgate Street, Long Melford (1901 to 1911), Hartwell House, Aynhurst, Buckinghamshire (1921) to [1924], Fairfield Lodge, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey [1927], 8 Hill Street, Westminster [1929], 2 Cardinal Avenue, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey (1939).  Occupation: Footman (1921), Butler [1927], House Steward (1939), Hotel Proprietor [1951].  Married: Gwendoline Rosa Lillian Toms in 1927.  Service Record: Thomas was conscripted under the name Clarence Thomas Stanhope as Pte.56720 with 17th [Service] Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers later transferring to 10th [Service] Battalion, both units seeing action on the Western Front.  At some later date he was moved to The Kings Liverpool Regiment as Pte.89658, receiving his discharge in 1919.[28]  Died: Lewes, Sussex in 1977.

Stanhope, William Harold – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 17.9.1889.[29]  Parents: Harry Stanhope (Wagon Painter, later Landlord of the White Hart Inn) [see details above] and Zillah [née Theobald].  Family Connections: Brother to Percy James Stanhope [b1886], Bertie Stanhope [b1897] and Charles John Stanhope [b1900], also, nephew of Arthur John Stanhope [b1877], uncle of William Harry Stanhope Theobald [b1899], cousin of Robert James Stanhope [b1897], and brother-in-law of Edward Ballantine Wright [b1880] and George Henry Lefley [b1883].  Home: The Green, Long Melford (1891 and 1901), White Hart Inn, St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911), St Catherines Road, Long Melford [1952].  Occupation: Carpenter (1911), Bricklayer for Clement Theobald and Sons [1916 to 1918], Licensed Victualler [1923].  Married: Lily May Harrington in 1915.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in October 1916, Clement Theobald and Sons [Builders], applied for William’s exemption, which was granted on the condition his situation remained unchanged.  In October 1918 the National Service Representative sought to have Stanhope’s certificate of exemption revoked by the West Suffolk Appeals Tribunal; this failed, although at the next sitting of the Melford Tribunal, an exemption was only granted for one month.  It is not known if he was conscripted at the end of that period, this would seem unlikely however, as the Armistice came into force only two days after his certificate expired.[30]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 9.8.1952.[31]

Theobald, William Harry Stanhope – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 18.11.1899.[41]  Parents: Harry Stanhope Theobald (Wheelwright) [see above for details] and Annie Maria [née Cadge] (Crinoline Horsehair Weaver).  Family Connections: Grandson of Harry Stanhope [b1859]; also, nephew of Percy James Stanhope [b1886] and William Harold Stanhope [b1889].  Home: Church Row, Long Melford (1901), St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911 to 1939).  Occupation: Bricklayer [1916], Motor Bus Proprietor (1939).  Married: Edith Raymond in 1928.  Service Record: At the Melford Military Service Tribunal in October 1916, Clement Theobald and Sons builders, applied for exemption on William’s behalf, which was granted for three months.  He was conscripted as Pte.GS/77757 with 17th [Service] Battalion [Empire], Royal Fusiliers [City of London] Regiment, and was posted to France from 5.5.1918 to 12.6.1918, as part of 6th Brigade, 2nd Division.  Died: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 1969.[42]

 Wright, Edward Stanley Stanhope – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 2.3.1916.[43]  Parents: Edward Ballentine Wright of Wrentham, Suffolk [Royal Field Artillery] [see below for details] and Eliza ‘Daisy’ [née Stanhope] of Long Melford.  Family Connections: Grandson to Harry Stanhope [b1859], and nephew of Percy James Stanhope [b1886], William Harold Stanhope [b1889], Bertie Stanhope [b1897] and Charles John Stanhope [b1900].  Home: St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911), St Catherines Road, Long Melford (1939), The Top Shop, The Green, Long Melford [1984].  Occupation: Carpenter (1939).  Married: Alice Maud Smith in 1931.  Service Record: Arthur was a member of the Local Defence Volunteers in Long Melford, being part of ‘H’ Company, 10th Battalion, Suffolk Home Guard when it was formed in August 1942.  His name is recorded in the official tribute to the organization entitled The Lion Roared his Defiance, photographed in and around Long Melford in 1944.[44]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 16.1.1984.[45]

Wright, Edward Ballentine – Born: Wrentham, Suffolk on 5.12.1880.[46]  Parents: Edward Wright of Gatfield, Suffolk (Saddler) and Margaret [née Farrer].  Family Connections: Son-in-law of Harry Stanhope [b1859]; also, brother-in-law of Percy James Stanhope [b1886], William Harold Stanhope [b1889], Bertie Stanhope [b1897] and Charles John Stanhope [b1900].  Home: High Street, Wrentham, Suffolk (1881 to 1891), Little St Marys, Long Melford (1911] to [1948].  Occupation: Grocer (1911 to 1939).  Married: Eliza ‘Daisy’ Stanhope of Long Melford in 1903.  Service Record: Edward was a member of the Long Melford Volunteer Training Corps in 1915.[47]  In January 1917 he made an application to the Military Service Tribunal in Long Melford to be exempt from conscription, which was refused.[48]  He was given one month to get his business affairs in order and was subsequently attested as Gnr.210092 with the Royal Field Artillery.[49]  Died: Long Melford, Suffolk in 1948.
