Warren, Arthur – Born: Beccles, Suffolk on 12.6.1900.[1] Parents: George Warren (Cowman) and Alice [née Whiting]. Family Connections: Brother to George William Warren resident of Long Melford [b1890], Frederick Charles Warren [b1882] and John Warren [b1903]. Home: Newgate Street, Beccles, Suffolk (1901), Turpins Farm, Kirby Cross, Essex (1911), 57 Witton Wood Road, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex (1939) to [1984]. Occupation: Gardener [1919], House Decorator and Painter (1939). Married: Edith Florence Emerson in 1925. Service Record: No definitive military record has been found for Arthur; however, he is recorded as enlisting in 1919 as Pte.13380 with The Queen’s [Royal West Surrey] Regiment.[2] Died: Frinton-on-Sea, Essex on 20.3.1984.[3]
Warren, Arthur – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk on 2.10.1924.[4] Parents: George William Warren (Labourer) [see details below] and Mabel Florence [née Howard] of Long Melford. Family Connections: Brother to Charles William Warren [b1927]; also, nephew of Frederick Charles Warren [b1882], Arthur Warren [b1900] and John Warren [b1903]. Home: 11 Bull Lane, Long Melford (1939). Occupation: Loom Attendant (1939). Married: Yvonne V. Mercer in 1949. Service Record: Arthur was a member of ‘H’ Company, 10th Battalion, Suffolk Home Guard, his name and image appearing in the official tribute to the organization entitled The Lion Roared his Defiance, photographed in and around Long Melford in 1944.[5] Died: Sudbury, Suffolk in 1996.
Warren, Charles William – Born: Long Melford, Suffolk in 1927. Parents: George William Warren (Labourer) [see details below] and Mabel Florence [née Howard] of Long Melford. Family Connections: Brother to Arthur Warren [b1924]; also, nephew of Frederick Charles Warren [b1882], Arthur Warren [b1900] and John Warren [b1903]. Home: 11 Bull Lane, Long Melford (1939). Service Record: Charles was a member of ‘H’ Company, 10th Battalion, Suffolk Home Guard, his name and image appearing in the official tribute to the organization entitled The Lion Roared his Defiance, photographed in and around Long Melford in 1944.[6] Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 1.5.2001.[7]
Warren, Frederick Charles – Born: Beccles, Suffolk on 23.9.1882.[8]. Parents: George Warren (Cowman) and Alice Ann [née Whiting]. Family Connections: Brother to George William Warren [b1890], Arthur Warren [b1900] and John Warren [1903]; also, uncle of Arthur Warren [b1924] and Charles William Warren [b1927]. Home: Newgate Street, Beccles, Suffolk (1901), Turpins Farm, Kirby Cross, Essex (1911), 2 Ormond Terrace, Great Cornard, Suffolk [1915] to (1921), 47 Nowton Road, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (1939), 74 Woodberry Way, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex [1969]. Occupation: Drayman for Green King and Son, Brewers [1915] to (1939). Married: Laura Emily Tuffin in 1912. Service Record: Conscripted on 3.12.1915, Frederick was mobilized on 21.8.1916 as Gnr.115624 with 1/2 Company, Sussex Royal Garrison Artillery and posted to France as Gnr.374576 to 352 Siege Battery, RGA. He served on the Western Front from May 1917 to October 1919, receiving his discharge a month later.[9] Died: Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex on 11.4.1969.[10]
Warren, George William – Born: Beccles, Suffolk on 16.9.1890.[11] Parents: George Warren (Cowman) and Alice Ann [née Whiting]. Family Connections: Father to Arthur Warren [b1924] and Charles William Warren [b1927]; also, brother of Frederick Charles Warren [b1882], Arthur Warren [b1900] and John Warren [b1903], and brother-in-law of Sidney Charles Howard [b1879] and William Howard [b1882]. Home: Newgate Street, Beccles, Suffolk (1901), Turpins Farm, Kirby Cross, Essex (1911), Spicers Yard, Long Melford [1927], 11 Bull Lane, Long Melford (1939). Occupation: Soldier (1911), General Labourer (1939). Married: Mabel Florence Howard of Long Melford in 1916.[12] Service Record: George enlisted as Pte. L/1658 with 16th [The Queen’s] Lancers, being posted to France from 17.8.1914 as part of 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. This unit was heavily engaged throughout the Great War namely: the Battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne, the Aisne, Messines and Armentières in 1914; Ypres in 1914 and 1915; Gheluvelt, St. Julien, Bellewaarde, Arras, Scarpe and Cambrai in 1917; and at the Somme, Amiens, Hindenburg Line, Canal du Nord, and the Pursuit to Mons in 1918.[13] George’s service continued at least through to 1927.[14] Died: Long Melford, Suffolk on 9.1.1975.[15]
Warren, James William – Born: Kingston, Hampshire on 6.6.1880.[16] Parents: James Warren (Sailor) and Sarah Ann Lowrie [née Booker]. Home: Glenroy House, Penhale Road, Portsea, Hampshire (1891), Military Garrison, Colchester, Essex (1901), Park Terrace, St Marys Street, Long Melford (1911 to 1921), 33 Southill, Shefford, Bedfordshire (1939). Occupation: Soldier (1901), Milkman on Melford Place Dairy Farm (1911), Cowman (1921 to 1939). Married: Maud Alice Willsher in 1907. Service Record: James is recorded as a Driver with the Royal Field Artillery on the UK Census for 1901. It is not known if he saw service during the First World War as no definitive record has been found.
Warren, John – Born: Beccles, Suffolk on 21.7.1903.[17] Parents: George Warren (Cowman) and Alice [née Whiting]. Family Connections: Brother to George William Warren resident of Long Melford [b1890], Frederick Charles Warren [b1882] and Arthur Warren [b1900]; also, uncle of Arthur Warren [b1924] and Charles William Warren [b1927]. Home: Turpins Farm, Kirby Cross, Essex (1911), 16 Victoria Terrace, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex (1921), 5 Churchfield Road, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex (1939). Occupation: Plumber (1921), Master Plumber [1942]. Married: Ethel Maud Moss in 1925. Service Record: John was conscripted as Gnr.1489170, later promoted to Lance Bombardier with 49 Battery, 48 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. Serving initially as air defence in Essex he was posted to the island of Java in March 1942 where his unit fell almost immediately into enemy hands and consigned to a Japanese prisoner of war camp at Labuan.[18] Died: L/Bdr. Warren died in captivity on 9.4.1945 and buried in Labuan War Cemetery [grave ref: M.A.7], Sabah, Malaysia, also commemorated on the Walton-on-the-Naze War Memorial. The circumstances of Frederick’s death POW camp, or his treatment leading up to it is not known, however serious cruelty took place there as evidenced at the subsequent Labaun War Crimes trial which ran from November 1945 to 1951.[19]
Warren, Thomas Henry – Born: Westminster, London on 15.12.1889.[20] Parents: James William Warren (Sawyer) and Elizabeth [née Shepherd]. Family Connections: Brother-in-law of William George Lilly of Long Melford [b1885] and Percival Alfred Lilly [b1894]. Home: Horseferry Road, Westminster (1891), Gatliff Buildings, Commercial Road, Westminster (1901), 4 Warsill Street, Battersea, London [1915], 81 Harvest Road, Egham, Surrey (1939). Occupation: Teacher [1915], School Master (1939). Married: Harriet May Lilly of Long Melford in 1915. Service Record: Thomas enlisted on 15.11.1915 as Rfn.4813 with 1/16th [County of London] Battalion (Queen’s Westminster Rifles), London Regiment, later issued with a new regimental number 551943. The Westminster Rifles saw action during the Somme Offensive of 1916 as part of 169th (3rd London) Brigade, 56th (1st London) Division. By 1917 he had been promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Aldershot as a Physical Training and Bayonet Instructor, being posted to Mesopotamia in 1918 as part of the Army Gymnastic Staff. He received his discharge in 1919.[21] Died: Ealing, Middlesex in 1972.
Warren, Walter John – Born: Little Bardfield, Essex on 24.6.1876.[22] Parents: Walter Henry Warren (Solicitor’s Clerk) and Hannah [née Bolden]. Home: Church End, Little Bardfield, Essex (1881), 1 Nunns Cut, St Martin, Colchester, Essex (1891), Hall Street, Long Melford (1901), 41 Gainsborough Street, Sudbury, Suffolk (1911 to 1921), 1 Melford Road, Sudbury (1939). Occupation: Solicitor’s Clerk (1901), Collector of Rates for Sudbury Borough Council (1911 to 1921), Auctioneer (1939). Married: Edith Jane Warr in 1901. Service Record: During the First World War Walter served as Lieutenant and Quartermaster with 5th Volunteer Battalion, The Suffolk Regiment.[23] Died: Sudbury, Suffolk on 17.7.1946.[24]
Warren, Walter Richard – Born: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on 31.12.1892.[25] Parents: Walter Joseph Warren (Groom) and Jane Elizabeth [née Ely]. Family Connections: Brother-in-law of Harry George Ranson [b1885] and Bertie George Ranson [b1895]; also, cousin of William Arthur Ely [b1889]. Home: 53 Raingate Street, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (1901), Barossa Barracks, Stanhope Lines, Aldershot, Surrey (1911), 10 Westly Road, Bury St Edmunds (1939), 26 Exeter Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk [1973]. Occupation: Assistant Master at Guildhall Feoffment Boys’ School in Bury St Edmunds [1921], Teacher at Silver Jubilee Senior Boys’ School in Bury St Edmunds [1931], Registered as Assistant Schoolmaster (1939). Married: Olive Angelina Ely née Ranson of Long Melford in 1923. Service Record: Walter was a private with 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment in 1911. During the First World War he served as Cpl.8086 with the Suffolk’s 1st Battalion, being posted to France on 16.1.1915 as part of 84th Brigade, 28th Division and seeing action between April and September at the Battles of Gravenstefel, St Julien, Frenzenberg, Bellewaarde and Loos. By the end of 1915 his unit had been shipped to Egypt, then on to Salonika until the end of hostilities in 1918. He received his discharge in April 1919.[26] During the Second World War Walter was a member of the Observer Corps.[27] Died: Felixstowe, Suffolk on 10.11.1973.[28]
