The long awaited archaeological geophysical results have now arrived having been commissioned by the Long Melford Heritage Trust Archaeological Unit covering the areas of the cricket and football pitches. The survey was conducted by Phase Site Investigations Ltd. and took two days to complete. The picture shows the highly sensitive magnetometry machine in operation which detects minute differences in the ground’s magnetic response. The picture which emerged shows a multitude of archaeological features, some of which confirm our recent findings, and others made in the 1960’s. What was surprising was the number of apparent Iron Age / Roman settlement roads which may have formed part of the town plan and regional connections. One feature in particular is most mysterious and could prove to be an exciting unusual and unique facility which Roman Long Melford could have offered.
