Football Ground Dig 1 July 2022

The Long Melford Heritage Trusts Archaeological Unit have opened a new excavation in our continual investigation into the villages Iron Age and Roman past.  Based on the findings from a test pit in 2013 and part of the Michael Woods T.V. Programme (The Story of England) also supported by Time Team’s Carenza Lewis.  One particular test pit revealed what was thought to be the floor of an ancient building.  Our Time Team have set out to discover the nature of the building thought to have been of Romano – British origins.

Work is expected to last some weeks and has attracted a huge amount of local interest.  Besides on open evenings on the site to explain to the community our objectives and findings to date, we have also hosted seventy-seven children aged from 9 to 11 years from Long Melford’s Primary school.  After a visit to the Long Melford Heritage Centre and Museum and voting on their favourite artifact, they come on to visit the archaeological site and assisted with sieving soil and collecting Roman pottery.
